I'm writing a novel, and I have looked everywhere for this little factoid: How far can a zebra travel in a day? What about a wildebeeste? I was sure I had heard it mentioned in at least one nature show focusing on the yearly migration of these animals, but I can't remember the numbers. Ballpark figures will do, but I really need something to go on. Thanks.
It's more of a circle than a staight line there and back. They travel about 800 miles between the Serengeti plains to the Massai Mara. It begins in May or June and they leave Massai Mara region to return to the newly wettened plains of the Serengeti around December. They arrive as early as July, but usually the most arrive around August. It looks to me like they can move anywhere from 9-14 miles/day. You have to take in account that they take pit stops even while on the move. Here's a link that explains the movements. You might be able to draw your own conclusions or find other links.
Thank you! I was beginning to give up hope, but this looks like a great website, and your numbers at least give me a starting point, when all I've had up to now were dead ends.
