While the crew was in Northern Michigan filming the painting of the Mackinac Bridge, they should have stopped by East Jordan Iron Works (EJIW)in East Jordan, Michigan. EJIW manufactures cast iron products such as sewer grates, manhole covers, fire hydrants and brake drums. I beleive it is one of the largest producers of these products in the United States (next time you pass a manhole cover or sewer grate, check out whether or not it is an EJIW product...chances are it is!).
The grinding room at EJIW is the dirtiest place I have ever worked. The dust from the moldings that the casts are poured is black and when the grinders work the castings the dust is EVERYWHERE. Not to mention that it is consitently around 100 degrees in this area of the plant (the casting are still very hot by the time they make it to the grinding room) and the black dust sticks to every part of your body that sweats. This is by far dirtier than anything else that I have seen on the show.
So Mike, call Tad at EJIW and get back to Northern Michigan because although the job is dirty, Northern Michigan is beautiful!
