Hello
Mr. Rowe each fall/winter I travel to my tiny village 8 miles outside of Sparta, Greece to harvest my Ancient Athenolia olive trees to make extra virgin olive oil..I harvest the old fashion centurian way..all by hand. We press our olives in a old pressure press (over 3 hours per pressing). Very Dirty.. From start to Finish..a REALLY Dirty Job. My hands swell so much that I can't comb my hair.
The mountain side is full of ancient history and everywere you look it's breathtaking beautiful. We start each morning with a shot of Brandy to help warm us up a bit, and continue with a few more shots at lunch , (helps keep you warm till we get to the local tavern after work)...
We lay 50 foot drop cloths under 2 olive trees at a time and I start by climbing on the tree and prunning with a hand saw..while helpers pick olives off the branches..we continue until we fill 8-10 bags or 700 kilos of olives. Then I take the olive bags to the press...Please visit my website and see for yourself...go to
www.vordonia.comOur village country side roads (in the winter) are always wet and muddy preventing us from driving our 4 wheel jeep (Lada Niva) to most higher elevation (olive fields), we have to cary all supplies and equipment to the top of hills and mountain sides and then carry the 40 kilo bags of olives back down through the wet muddy fields and roads.
Most of our olive fields are slopped some 90 degrees..(Kolosfendounou-olive field..we have to sit on our behinds to harvest the 5 olive trees..because of the incline.
The press is run by 5 brothers who a few years ago lived in New Jearsy ( working as carpenters). They moved back to thier village and rebuild the Old Fashion Olive Press. All this for ONLY around 1000 bottle of the Perfect extra virgin Olive Oil...
Olive harvesting by hand and pressing at the old fashion pressure press (8 Kilometers outside of Ancient Sparta, on Mt. Taygetos)..6 words discibes this work.. PERFECT DIRTY JOB for MIKE ROWE.
I hope you can join us on our next harvest. We would love to have you.
Ps. My brother George and I ran Plato's Palate in Bethesda. Half block from Discovery Ch. We thought of our selfs as Discoverys Kitchen. 99.9 percent of our bussiness was from Discivery. Mr. Hendricks loved the Pyro Gyro and many came for my burger invention..The famous UOZOBURGER.
Thank You
