I have had a lot of low paying menial jobs over the years. They paid the bills and kept a roof over my head until I figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up. From working almost every aspect of sheet metal (with the missing digit to prove it) to restaurant management.
By far the worst position I ever held was Porter at an Apartment complex. I was doing this through a temp agency so I would do multiple complex a week or sometimes in a day. The job is simple and necessary. First thing in the morning(right when the apartment office opened) the parking lot was cleaned and the dumpster areas picked up. Then a little light landscaping. If that was finished before lunch(rarely) the hard part of the job started. It was my responsibility to clear out and ready apartments for new tenants. This usually involved furniture moving, closet emptying, wall repair, and refrigerator cleaning out. Cleaning out an eviction was bad. I usually found things that would make a mortician swoon.
Once the apartment was cleared out it needed to be cleaned. Sinks, tubs, and tile. Imagine industrial strength solvents in wounds from carrying furniture.
I am currently training to be a nurse and this job that I did for a total of six weeks still haunts me.
