When somebody does this job they have to wake up at 4:30am for 2 or 3 weeks. Not only do they have to wake up early they have to pull tassels (out of corn, if you didnt know what detasseling is). Which is pretty hard since early in the morning its wet and can get cold but when it gets near noon the temperatures can reach 100 degrees. You also have to worry about pesticides, pollen getting everywhere, corn rash, mud, blisters, making sure you dont sprain an ankle and many other things. We have to worry about all these things while making sure we pull 99.7% of the tassels. This is a very dirty job that without us some of the corn wouldnt be avalible to eat. It also has many benefits as a worker, but due to the difficulty of this job the number of workers are decreasing. And i think that if Mike and the dirty jobs crew came out to do maybe a mini summer series it would help boost the popularity of this dirty job.
I also am a detasseler for Pioneer, and i have posted this job before and I completely agree with it being a dirty job. Today for example (I just got home from detasseling) We went through a field that had 2ft of water in it wherever we went. And we were soaked all morning, until about 12 or 1 when it became very hot. This is a very dirty job
