This place I worked at for three months has a job for Mikeymike, if he can stomach it-working at a rendering plant for Southern Tier Hide and Tallow, in Elmira, NY. I am not talking about fresh ones, like a farm down the road...Many of these animals are more than 24 hours dead, and so far decomposed, they fall apart while the truckdrivers try to put them on the truck. The summer is the worst, because the animals decompose faster. But the worst of all, is working IN the plant. The stench of the spoiled cattle flesh was carried downwind one day in September, when I was working in the office in 1998, and I almost fainted. These men must take a carcass, cut it open, remove the guts, strip the hide-if it is salvageable, and strip the bones for processing. All the various parts get separated to different companies-hides go to leather companies, flesh goes to other companies, and bones go to another company. Even the fat is cooked down to get the oil for tallow, as the oil is cooked until it is solid. They also visit restaurants to pick up used cooking oil for the tallow as well. If MikeyMike can stomach it, he should try to do this job. It would definitely be a show not for the weak of stomach-believe me!
