I'm a Naval Officer who has spent MANY years on submarines. While there are numerous dirty jobs, some are quite unique to the submarine environment. I could name a few but by far, the most disgusting is cleaning of the sanitation tanks.
Excrement on board a submarine has to go somewhere before it goes overboard and that is into one of numerous tanks onboard. After a deployment, when in port, they need to be cleaned. There is only one way to do this - get inside and scrape away! As you might imagine, not everyone is up to the task and although personal protective equipment is provided, some just don't go the distance.
Hi, I work for the Dirty Jobs research staff. Can you describe the process of cleaning out the sanitation tanks on the submarines in a bit more detail so I can see the process involved. Is there a particular port where you do this cleaning? How often does it happen? What are some of the other dirty jobs on a submarine? If you have any pictures of this dirty job you can email them to me at dirtyjobsresearch@yahoo.com Thanks, djresearch
