This isn't a wilderness survival tip, but a tip for disaster/emergency prearedness at home.
We all know (or should know) to keep candles/lanterns/flashlights available for power outages, but how many of us think about making use of something that many of us have around our homes that don't fall into these categories.
For example, many of us have the Solar Powered accent lights around our homes and sidewalk/driveway borders, but they rarely get used for anything other than lighting the path or the borders of a flower bed.
Back in the winter when IL,MO,and KY were hit by the major ice storm that left millions without power for weeks (our house was without for 13 days), I would be driving around and seeing houses lighted by candles or lanterns, while outside, going to waste were solar powered accent lights around a flower bed.
Why not put the lights to use in the house during the evening and recharge them outside in the daytime?
You could place one in the bathroom or hallways or rooms you use the most and save your candles/lamp oil and flashlight batteries for something more important.
This makes even more sense in the scenario that happened here with the ice storm. The power was down to everything. Stores were closed, gas stations were closed and it was several days before the infrastructure was powered back up and folks could go to town and get supplies such as more lamp oil/candles and batteries, yet the whole time, thousands of solar powered accent lights were not utilized at all!
Think about it folks!
