I recently replaced the steel handled hatchet in my kit with a "old timey" Tomahawk type hand axe.

It is lighter overall than the steel handled hatchet, as well as having a longer handle to aid in "chopping" wood.

The hickory handle is easily replaceable if need be and I could if I had to make a handle for temporary (emergency) use in the field.

It saves weight and is very versitile.

I have been going around to various 'second hand", "thrift" and goodwill stores perusing through other peoples junk and have found them to be a good source for small metals tins with twist off lids. I have been buying these tins for around .25cents to $1.00 and filling them with various items that I keep in my kit.

Well, due to all the weeks of post surgery steroids I took last year after my Glaucoma implant surgeries, the bone above my four front upper teeth eroded away and created a "pockets" for infection to set up in.

As a result, my dentist pulled my four front teeth and I am currently wearing a tempoary partial plate until my gums heal and they can make me a regular, "fitted" partial plate.

So I got to thinking, if I am out and about and lost or broke my partial, I would be pretty messed up trying to eat.

So, I reckon when I get my "new" teeth, this tempoary partial is going in my kit so that I'll always have my four front teeth if I need them!

Part of the ageing process I reckon. Wink

This isn't a wilderness survival tip, but a tip for disaster/emergency prearedness at home.

We all know (or should know) to keep candles/lanterns/flashlights available for power outages, but how many of us think about making use of something that many of us have around our homes that don't fall into these categories.

For example, many of us have the Solar Powered accent lights around our homes and sidewalk/driveway borders, but they rarely get used for anything other than lighting the path or the borders of a flower bed.

Back in the winter when IL,MO,and KY were hit by the major ice storm that left millions without power for weeks (our house was without for 13 days), I would be driving around and seeing houses lighted by candles or lanterns, while outside, going to waste were solar powered accent lights around a flower bed.

Why not put the lights to use in the house during the evening and recharge them outside in the daytime?

You could place one in the bathroom or hallways or rooms you use the most and save your candles/lamp oil and flashlight batteries for something more important.

This makes even more sense in the scenario that happened here with the ice storm. The power was down to everything. Stores were closed, gas stations were closed and it was several days before the infrastructure was powered back up and folks could go to town and get supplies such as more lamp oil/candles and batteries, yet the whole time, thousands of solar powered accent lights were not utilized at all!

Think about it folks! Wink
