I'm sure this question has been posted before... I just didn't have the time and patience to dig through all of the many threads to see. I'm wondering what knife Les uses and what others see as their favorite wilderness knife. I've got a sog seal pup elite and have really been impressed with it. What are your thoughts?

According to this source: Survival TopicsLes carries the Buck 119 Special. Buck makes excellent high quality knives both fixed blade and lock blade folders that are affordable. My personal preference is a Marine issue full size KABAR. If you don't like a knife that big, KABAR also makes/sells a KABAR "Short", same design as the full size Marine issue but smaller. (5 1/4" blade) KABAR also makes several other style knives and survival tools. I also usually carry a Coleman/Western Bowie that pulls good duty as a short machete. For a shapening stone I simply carry a plain old two sided Arkansas stone and I also carry a cheap "10 second" sharpener for quick touch ups to an edge. Welcome aboard!

I have personally always liked Gerber knives and tools, they are well made and not ridiculously expensive.

While I have never personally carried a Gerber, I can vouch that they are an excellent knife as well. Back in my Marine Coprs days, when the Gerber BMF first hit the market a lot of my buddies bought and carried them for field use. I never saw or heard of one not being well worth the money.

Yes, the Leatherman WAVE is the MULTITOOL Les carries. When he has also carried a knife he carries the Buck 119 Special. The Q&A never asked what kind of knife he carried, it was specific in what kind of "multitool" he carried. Note the quote from the Q&A below: quote: Q: I've watched several episodes of your show and I've noticed that you always carry the same "multi-tool." What type is it? Which items do you use that a good-sized, fold-up knife does not have? Which feature, besides the blade, is the most useful to you and why?
A: My favorite multi-tool is the Leatherman Wave. Other than the multi-tool, an ax is an amazing item to have. Don't forget to keep a sharpening file with it and learn how to sharpen — it makes a big difference. A bandana is always useful and, of course, a fool-proof way to start a fire is essential.
There is no question that having a multi-tool or fold-up knife with a saw blade is a fantastic advantage. That little saw blade makes fashioning tools and traps a lot easier.

Unfortunately, I don't buy commemorative knives (or guns). I know they can increase in value, but when I buy a knife (or gun), I buy it to use. I even use the WWII knives I have as they are built to take years of use and abuse.

Even a cheap piece of junk can save your life, but why take the risk of using a knife that may fail you. I'll stick with my KABAR.
