you just have to squeezee /kick;; u can try clucking at the same time u tap with the crop a couple of times [if he canters when u tap him] then the next tmie squeeze & cluck & he should canterr
mY trainer taught me to take your left leg and give a squeeze on the left side, but bring your left leg back a little. Also, giving a little tap with a whip or crop is good too.
Yo, Ima english rider. The best advice I have been given cantering is to breathe and slow down. Especially during courses. Think slow. It's hard to describe it
Cantering takes practice, but through time and determination you and your horse will become very fluent. I would try to avoid using a crop as much as possible. Horses tend to cooperate much more if you use your leg aids to guide them instead. First, you need to have a feel of both your left and right reigns. It doessn't need to be tight, but your horse must feel slight tension from the reigns through the bit in his mouth. If you are attempting a right lead canter you want to use you left leg to gently squeez him into the transition. If you are trying to make him do a walk to canter, do not let him step up into the trot. This will make it a lot harder in the long run, trust me. Another simple tip that might help you is to gently turn your horses head to the inside, without overbending. When you first begin the canter I'd suggest doing wide circles to get your horse into a neat package. After following some of those steps you'll be on your way to jumping! Hope that helps.
^ i disagre...don't teach ur horse to go forward by going into 2. it should be leg and seat...not encouraging them by getting out of the seat..they won't learn
^^I agree with eventerr_. The best thing to do when asking for the canter is relax. Also if you slide your outside leg behind the girth and put your weight to the outside your horse will surely canter.( it also helps when you r trying to get the right lead). If you really can't get the correct lead pick up and open the inside regin. I hope that helps!
thanks, i took my big test at the stables last friday. This really really stubborn QH named Cisco is 16 and i had to canter him. NO ONE HAD EVER CANTERED HIM AT MY STABLES THE 2 YEARS I WAS THERE. Then i went out into the ring trotted and then i put my hand forward kicked and he strated to canter my instructor was amazed.
