ok here's a story about my first fall.

One day at the barn i ride at, i got to ride my favorite horse there, Colorado. now Colorado is 7 years old and VERY WILD AND FAST!! so about 20 miniutes into my lesson suddenly out of nowhere Colorado takes off. i couldn;t stop him. then i fell off. i wasn't hurt. tell me about your falling adventures.

here are some tips.
1: Let go of the reins and grip your arms around the horses neck
2: take your feet out of the sturrups.
3: once you are in the air about ready to hit the ground curl up into a ball.

I just recently fell off last week. It didnt hurt that much. I do saddleseat riding with american saddlebreds. My horse and I were trotting really fast and we were in this riding ring where there is a pasture right next to it. There were these 2 baby horse and he was started to get scared of them and we were passing one corner and the horse charge at him and he swirved to the left and I rolled of the left side. It didnt hurt that much. That was my second fall off since I've been riding. And I have been riding for 4 years. I landed right on my cell phone too. But I was okay and so was my cell phone. lol.

One time I was cantering a horse, and the horse ran into the wall. I went flying headfirst into the wall.

well, i've been riding for years and had some really terrible falls (one where i lascerated my spleen. i was bleeding internally for days & in the hospital).
On another note...every rider should learn to do the one-rein stop...it's the only way to stop a runaway horse. This should be practiced everyday and you should practice it from w/t/c. You completely let go of one of the reins (say right) and shorten your left rein until the horses head is completely bent (almost to your toe). If a horses head is bent, he can't go forward anymore : )

Just this weekend I went riding with my sister and our two horses, Socks and Pawnee. We were going down a trail that hasn't been used all winter when all of a sudden my horse,Socks, just sank through the snow. She got back up and a few feet down the trail she fell again. She got back up again but fell down again after a few feet. She didn't get up so I got off of her and had to break the trail for her and Pawnee. The snow was up to my mid-thigh. After that little incident (neither of the horses were hurt, the snow was deep and really soft) we continued down the trail. After half an hour we were riding side by side up a hill that looked safe, when Pawnee suddenly fell down. A few seconds later Socks fell down. I jumped off my horse but my sister's foot got caught in the stirrup. She managed to roll free though. The horses were fine too, it was actually kind of funny. My sister hurt her knee while I hurt my wrist, not badley though.

I've been riding for over 30yrs....have had a few falls Wink. My sister & I were trail riding on a narrow trail after heavy rain. I was in front, her mare was being goofy so she corrected her & it spooked my horse...she jumped straight up & over and I went off into the mud puddle. All I saw was 1300 lbs of horse coming down at me...luckily she stood perfectly still & I was basically unhurt..but what a mess!!! My sister thought it was hysterical!!

I had on lesson that I was riding a 20 year old horse. Our barn had been told how awesome she was and how she took care of her riders. NOT!!!
We were jumping crossrails and she took off. When we finished the line (about 4 seconds later) she bucked like I had never seen a horse buck before. My trainer said that her feet were higher than her head. THe first thing that came into my mind was... I'm am gonna go flying off this horse. i was leaning so far back and using my entire body to pull her head off. I finally stopped her and got off shaking I was so scared and amazed on how I managed to stay on that horse. I have had some bad falls. About two years ago I was dragged and thankfully I had a rein in my had and was able to keep her in control on the ground and then I was able to shake my foot loose. It si really wierd how you think while you are falling.

No! NO! Holding on to the neck is the one of the BIGGEST mistakes!!!!! U will lose ur balance and fall off. The same thing happened to me Caro2line. Grip one reign and turn him in a TIGHT circle, then he cant run!

I got taken off on by a TB

I was riding one of the craziest horses at the barn I go to. Her name is Lady G who is a gaited pony. She has a history for dumping riders!!! Usually she bolts with people and they can NEVER stop her. So one day I took her for a trail and all of sudden a squirell comes running through path right in front of her. She flips out! She started bucking so high I just fell off.

Another one of my weird stories is....I was doing a lesson on Romeo a 6 year bulldog quarter horse. Him and I are starting dressage together. A horse spooks in one of the paddocks by the ring. The horse starts snorting but I would not let him run. He has a leg problem so he can not canter with a rider on him. So he throws the highest buck. I have seen him buck before and basically he is bucking and trotting at the same time. (even though he was trying to canter when this happened) So I go over his neck and land on my feet. i seriously landed on my feet but then 2 seconds after i landed...i fell.

superchickfrk

Thanks. Holding onto the neck automatically makes your weight shift foward and lose balance. As soon as I tried that on the horse who took off, I fell.

And believe me, falling off a 17.2 (5'10'') hand horse is NOT fun!

I've been riding for 11 1/2 years and have had some nasty falls.

Some of my most memorable falls:

- At a horse show me and my old show horse who is now retired crashed into an oxer and he fell down on his knees almost flipping over.

- I was riding my old horse and we were trotting. He shied to the side and I slipped off the other way.

- I was riding the pony I train at my barn and he took off with me bucking and then stopped RIGHT infront of a wall, I crashed into the wall and fell on my back.

- I was on another pony and we had just been jumping around and he took off and went swerving around and then stopped quickly and I slid off.

That's just some of them.

I've fallen off 57 times in my 16 year riding career (yes I keep count).

Some of my most memorable:

-Bucked off a pony named Ebony into a cement wall and bruised both my tail bone, left shoulder blade and suffered serious whip lash.

-Eeyore ,a QH pony, shoved his foot through the slats of a dressage gate (the little white fences) and bucked and reared his way around the ring until he dislodged me and snapped the plastic fencing off.

-Scarlet, a TB Mare, who decided the Trekhener didn't look so fun to jump after all, sent me flipping over her shoulder and breaking my ankle in the process.

-Mein Liebling, a WB Mare, who decided the oxer didn't look so fun to jump afer all...I flipped over her left shoulder and wound up with the imprint of a jump cup in my behind.

-Hooligan, TB Gelding spooked at a backfiring tractor, ejecting me from the saddle and putting my head through a wooden kick board.

-Casper, TB Gelding, took off a half stride too early for the triple bar...cleared it with a wing, prayer, and a huge buck... tossing me in front of him, after which he cantered across my hand and broke it in three places.

-Blossom, Morgan Mare, slammed on the breaks in front of the bank jump to eat the grass on top flipping me over her head...so I wound up in front of her still holding the reins slightly confused as to how I got there.

-Jack B Quick, Welsh gelding, doing a running vault during a game of high-low and launched right over his 12 hand back and ate dirt on the other side.

Hey I'm new here though I'd add:
12 years old riding my QH mare bareback out in a pasture. It was a beautiful day and we were cantering up a hill. Guess she felt good caues she kicked up her heels and i went off over her head. After i came off she stopped and was looking at me as if she was questioning why i was on the ground. I wasn't hurt.. just a bruised backside. Got back on a rode off again.

20 years old. I was running a local barn where most of the borders were just hobbiest and rode on trails most of the time. Most nights we would all hang around and ride in the arena and socialize. I was tough and had earned the nick name "G.P." which stood for Guinea Pig "cause i would ride any problem horse" So one of the borders offered to let me ride his little "bombproof" gaited horse namer Dee. Well I got on and was going round the arena when a deer dashed through the woods. Dee went one way and I went the other. I was trying to hang on a right myself but it was no use. So I just dropped to the ground. My toughness was really a joke on that day. But dee and I were fine.

: enjoyed reading all your stories:

The best thing you can do to avoid falling off is go with it, try rocking the reins back and forth and if all else fails hold on tight if the horse bolted and will not stop he will not do anything to try to hurt himself so if you hang on tight you have less of a chance of getting hurt and the horse should eventually come to a stop, and if still no stop then let go of the outside rein hold on tight and pull the inside rein so the horse spins to a stop(if trail riding do not do that on a narrow trial)
ive only fallen off once out of the 8 years i have been riding, i forgot my helment i was riding bare back and my horse spooked sidesteped so fast i fell off the other side thank god i did not get hurt, the best thing you can do after a fall is get right back on.

ive fallen off 5 times in my pasat 3 years of riding. hah i guess i cant stay on now.
the first time was the horse bucking going into the canter first year of riding , i had no legs ha. then i fell off a pony mare bareback when she spooked at a dark corner it wasnt to far of a fall. third was the next day :] off a horse i was brining back into work and he fell down.
the next was off another mare that tripped and i somersaulted over her head. most of teh time i wasnt hurt. that time i couldnt get up for 10 minutes. and 5th was off this pony jack we were heading for a jump and he darted to the side and i hit the jump and he pulled me a bit. i got a scar on my back.
what ever u do if ur gona fall off is let go off the reeins that way u dont get dragged and u dont hurt the horses mouth.
