I watched the show and it was cool and all, like always. But why pick New Orleans, I guess for the high profile and the partying. New Orleans was not even hit that hard. New Orleans was built way under sea level and that is why they have the leveys and that is why it flooded so bad. The people that were lost there was just because they would not leave a city 20 feet or more under sea level. They were warned. Everyone is always on the television winin about NO, Mississippi was hit just as bad, but you dont see us crying and blaming other people, looting after the storm, shooting at helicopters trying to help. Just makes no sense why Miami Ink followed the same as everyone else and went to New Orleans, the worst of the storm did not even hit there!!! Just my thoughts after being in the middle of the Katrina storm itself on the coast of Mississippi, and being here after and watching the struggle and rebuild.
I would like to clear up some misinformation. It doesn't take long to look up some quick basics online.
First of all, the city is not 20 feet below sea level. Only 51% is below sea level with only a few neighborhoods being 10 feet below. The average puts the city as a whole maybe one or two feet below sea level. Also, the city when it was founded nearly 300 years ago was not built below sea level (the oldest areas including the French Quarter were largely untouched.) Also, as the city became more successful, the population expanded into the outlying areas.
I understand Mississippi's pain and our states are like sisters after sharing the devastation of Katrina. Mississippi has already made huge gains in their rebuilding process and I wish them tons of future success.
I'm confused how you can say that New Orleans wasn't "hit that hard" and yet still wonder why people didn't leave. Hard storms are staple in Louisiana (a tornado touched down just last week by my house) and a HUGE portion of the population are without vehicles. My family which lives across the lake and left days before Katrina still had difficulty getting out of the storm's way and many feared they'd be trapped in their cars when it hit. Better to stay at home.
The flooding of New Orleans was a MAN-MADE disaster. Lack of funding left our wetlands, a natural barrier, eroded. Levees failed under Category 1 winds! And then the citizens of New Orleans were left stranded for days. I've known kids who saw their friends drown. I've known people who swam down flights of stairs in their apartments when they found the emergency hatch to the roof locked. No one condones the looting and the violence but I can tell you that the majority of people were busy trying not to drown or starve while waiting for help they weren't sure was ever going to come.
I applaud the crew of Miami Ink for reminding America that, not only are we still struggling, but we're still here fighting for our culture and our heritage. I applaud all the volunteers and the returning residents of New Orleans.
We have enough hardship without people like you spitting lies and filth.
I am from New Orleans origionally, but have lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the past 15 years. While it was "nice" of you to go to New Orleans to show their devistation from Hurricane Katrina, the effects they had were after the fact and were not a direct cause of the Hurricane. My family and myself lost 2 businesses and 3 homes during Katrina in Mississippi.
All of the emphasis has been shown on New Orleans for the past almost 3 years now, but there is a huge difference in destruction in the 2 areas.
While the levees broke in New Orleans and water sat for weeks. We had NOTHING left.
I am so tired of hearing how the focus is always on New Orleans. They were not the only ones affected, and sorry, but they were not affected as bad as the Gulf Coast.
Imagine coming back to go to your home to see what survived only to find a slab where your house was.
Along with the Gulf Coast, St. Bernard Parish was affected equally as we were.
New Orleans suffered from ignorace of political figures. Where was everyone when it came time to help there....GONE!!!!!
The politicians that were largely responsible for many of the problems were elected again, so I guess the people got what they deserve. If I lived somewhere that had politicians that messed up so badly I sure as heck would not re-elect them. Also the people that lost their homes would have gotten money to replace them if they were responsible and bought insurance.
Well, it looks like with this storm Gustov New Orleans will see what it is like to get the bad side of the storm. Just like with Katrina and the MS Gulf Coast and we were on the east side of the storm and got destoyed. Now New Orleans will be on the east side of this storm. The only bad thing is that it will be many more years of listening to them whine all the time about what help they are not getting and how it is not fair. I get tired of hearing all the crap they spit out to make everyone feel sorry for them. Do something yourself and quit depending on the government all the time to get you out of a bind!!!! Have some self respect!!!
