Can anyone give me a rough estimate of what a tattoo cost $$$ at the shop. I know it is piece/artist specific but does anyone know if they are reasonable? Anybody have any experience with them yet?

Not sure what side of the border your from? Here in Canada there's a flate rate of $50 for the artist to set up the tattoo machine, inks and sanitize their station. After that it's based on time. How long it takes to finish your art piece. Hope this helps!

I discussed prices with my artist - not to try to bargain him down, but to find out how much work I could afford.

I wouldn't go bargain shopping with something so permanent. I'd look for an artist who has good word of mouth from people who live in your area.

I'd rather pay a high price for a sterile, safe, professionally done tattoo than get a "discount" for something that might kill me or make me very sick or even maim me because some "wannabe" gave me a "bargain" rate.

My guy, and he's good, charges $140 per hour. That doe snot include the time he spends actually drawing out concepts I have or stuff like that. I tip him too (he's got a baby on the way.)
