Please consider this note merely Discovery Channel Image Control from a fan of several of your shows. I just watched an episode of FutureWeapons and it was extremely interesting. During the last segment, concerning the Thermobaric weapons, mention was made twice of the test bomb being dropped on a tunnel in Nevada by an F-15. I'm not from a military background at all, just a fan with an interest in military aircraft, but I believe the weapon was dropped from an F-16 Falcon.
I just reviewed that mistake and it looks like the host had a script to read from, and that the test was probably conducted using an F-15 Strike Eagle, but the incorrect footage used was of an F-16 C/D tandem seater. The error more than likely occured during editing.
Here is a quote from this website, and it confirms that the test did indeed involve an F-15 which was used to deploy the weapon. This only one example I found. Google is an amazing tool!
"WASHINGTON -- On Dec. 14, an F-15 Eagle combat jet from the 53rd Wing at Eglin Air Force Base in northwest Florida took off from Nellis Air Force Base, flew over the middle of the Nevada Test Site and dropped a newly designed laser-guided bomb into a tunnel about 85 miles northwest of Las Vegas."
So, it appears the host was correct in his narration, but the production and editing department dropped the ball, and sloppily inserted the wrong footage.
Maybe the Discovery Channel can use this season to learn how improve its production value....
Last night's episode of FutureWeapons was great. What a great help the laser weapons would be to all police departments and swat teams. Looking forward to next week's episode. Good Work Discovery.
