Of course Les is a fake. How do you explain the fact that he is across a lake or a desert and the camera is on the other side? Does he walk all the way back to retrieve it? If you look at the credits at the end it shows ADDITIONAL CAMERA and it shows 3 names. People actually film him just like Bear. I like Bear anyway if he is surviving or not. He shows how to survive and he eats and kills his meals on the spot.
I'm a fan of both shows. I'm not above thinking either Les or Bear is ever in a situation where calling for help is not available. However, I do believe these shows are great for what they are they for... education. The fact is though that they have to be entertaining as well, or they wouldn't be on TV. They both set themselves up for certain scenarios for the purpose of showing folks what to do in these situations. I'm sure both research where they are going before they get there to learn about the weather, geography, plant life, etc of the area in an effort to better inform the viewing audience. I'm confused as to why this is so difficult for folks to understand.
Additionally, with notes to the folks that talked about the zooming camera on Survivorman. I was thinking the same thing but then thought about a remote control or the timing of the footage (at the beginner or end of the trip; see below).
To danny843; the 'additional camera' in the credits probably has to do with the crew that he has at the beginning and the end of his adventure. Additionally, I'm sure there is another crew taking scenic footage of the area as show fillers. Also, I wouldn't put it past Les to set up the camera, do something, then come back to get it simply for its educational or entertaining value.
As for Bear... well I can't really explain his willingness to drink blood and urine, eat bugs, raw animals and the like as anything other than authentic. While fakable, keep in mind that he purposely gets into a situation to demonstrate ways to get out of that situation. When it comes down to it, he can probably [surpass you], so go easy on him.
