I'm located in mid-western South Carolina and I've been building my habitat for about 6 years, starting with a butterfly garden that has now gone through at least 4 incarnations and now is mostly native flowers and grasses with the pond in there. I was lucky in that there were many mature hardwoods and pines on the 1 acre property when I bought it and I've added a number of other trees. I've also added large shrub borders and groupings as well as flower beds. The habitat has a long way to go to maturity but even in the few short years it's been in existance I've seen the diversity of species increase.
