Hey all. I'm currently getting a Roots & Shoots programs started. I have some ideas for projects but I was hoping that you guys could give me some more tips.
This is what I've come up with for my group of kids:
1. Learn how to take care of and handle the resident animals in our center.
2. Creating a garden in our backyard.
3. Starting some fundraisers, like cell phone recycling or penny drives.
4. Making toys and treats for dogs and cats in a local kennel.

I know these ideas are pretty typical. Do you guy have any other ideas? Thanks!

Our group is incredibly proud to offer these most beautiful hand made items for fundraising. Each one is hand made - with most obvious love & respect from the artisans. Proceeds to the Jane Goodall Institute & Roots & Shoots.

The Visionary. Debby Rooney.
"I am a certified teacher with over 18 years of experience in environmental education as a teacher and a program developer for a major aquarium. I have visited the national game reserves of India, Nepal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zaire, Baja Mexico and Kenya. During the spring of 1991, I took an extended trip to East Africa concentrating much of my time in Kenya with the Maasai people and the endangered animals. I was hooked, and wanted to share my love of Kenya, the endangered animals and people. Since then I have presented “African Tails”, an elementary level school program which I developed, to over 120,000 students throughout the Northeast.

Although educating American students is vital, it provides no direct aid to the people or animals of Kenya. In conjunction with The African Conservation Center and Wildlife Conservation Center in Nairobi, Kenya, I helped the Dupoto Women’s Group of the Maasai people to refine their traditional handicraft of beadwork and develop a product for market overseas – DOG COLLARS. Volunteers hand-carry and market the collars in the United States. This project provides the women with their primary source of income and each woman’s profit per item has doubled . There are now (2002) 25 women in the collective, supporting over 125 children. They work very hard to make a better life for their families and educate their children.

All of the profit is returned to the women’s group.

Young women of the Maasai people are often forced to marry when they are only about 13 years old. THIRTY dollars a month will provide them with an alternative – the opportunity to continue their education. Educating third world girls is one of the primary methods of reducing overpopulation, improving quality of life and positively impacting the environment.

In 1999, the sponsorship program for the daughters of the Dupoto Women’s Group began with 2 girls. This year, 2002, 24 girls are attending Kenyan schools through this program.

I will be visiting the girls, their schools and families in November. I’m sure I will have many wonderful pictures and stories to share with you.

Thank you for your interest."

Hi,
I'm responding to your email about wanting fundraising ideas for your kids. I'm an artisan that makes a lovely line of silk cord jewelry, popular with all age groups. My customers range from teenage and younger to elderly. Until now, I've only sold this jewelry at craft fairs, but am now wanting to sell it exclusively for fundraising for the Jane Goodall Institute or other groups that support our animals, planet and humanity.

I would contribute 1/2 of the proceeds from sales to the project of your choice.

Anyone that's interested may contact me at mattermotion@ixpres.com. I look forward to hearing from you!

I saw a woman at our local farmers' market selling little bags she made from old Capri Sun Juice Pouches. She washed & dried them, flattened them & sewed them together. Sewed in a fabric liner, canvas handles & glue gunned a fabric flower on the outside. I bought one it was so cute. I don't sew but it really didn't look too difficult & it seems like an ideal R & S project, re-using food packaging that isn't recyclable.
