When you get right down to it, this show is about nothing but sex. Michelle and JB are having babies like rabbits and now it seems that Josh and Anna are going to start in, if the teasers running right now are in fact accurate. For a family who thinks they are so "modest" and "pure" they basically are entertaining the masses with sex. Can you say "Christian Porn?"
Porn shows sex, it's not a discussion fo the rightful place of sex. Ifanything the Duggars' shows are reminding people that sex has a very particular use and place, not the messed-up one our culutre has created.

I totally agree with you. Exactly WHAT is the Duggars claim to fame? They have successfully managed to reproduce 16 times (2 sets of twins). Other than that, why do they have their own tv show? Actually, I think it's pretty gross.
Your idea of proper may differ from some, wenonah. Not everyone thinks that sex is solely for procreating, some feel that it can be just an expression of love and intimacy. Me, I'm not sure that I would want my children to learn the Duggars' apparent message of "go and forth and mate, because we need to have more kids." I'd rather try to teach my kids about the beauty of a healthy sex life in as part of committed relationship, instead of what I see as the somewhat warped view the Duggars teach.
I didn't say it was for procreating only (and frankly I doubt that's the Duggars' position. It was Franklin's ideal, however, strangely enough, although he certainly didn't live up to it!) More to the point, the Bible doesn't restrict sex to trying to concieve. The place and purpose is within marriage, for both pleasure and procreation. At times it will be one and not the other (such as sex during pregnancy or after menopause, or even if one's not especially enjoying sex while TTC).
The only point I was trying to make is that this family talks about sex more than any family I've ever been around, and the obvious fact that they have 18 kids "and counting" is the ONLY reason they have a t.v. show in the first place. Therefore, entertaining with sex.
The main topic is that they have a freakish number of children. Again, the ONLY reason they have a t.v. show. And lucky for them, or else how would they manage to feed them all?
I think this is a silly way to describe this show. It is a show about family life. Of course sex is a part of every family where there are parents and children, but I think most people would agree a family is about much more than sex. It is all about relationships between individuals and how we grow and tend out next generation. I think the Duggars are popular because of the way they make a large family work and seem to be living happy lives. Some people may not agree with it but they are still interested to see how the family live. If the family was this large but totally disfunctional, just scraping by and barely coping, living on welfare ect people would not be so interested in the programme.

I agree with you..if they did not have that huge lot of kids..no show. I am uncomfortable when someone brings up how many of us are in my family. I am only the 5th one and my Dad sends me a Christmas card every year..it's really sad he does not know how to spell my name. I have wondered if he knows when my birthday is..I have never gotten a call on my birthday from him except when it is on Thanksgiving and he asks me if I am having a good Thanksgiving!

Whether you agree about the number of children or not, they still have this show because of the # of children they have. Unfortunately, there seems to be a trend of this going on, especially on TLC mostly. So, I believe this also affects how people may view it.
I also believe that they in many ways ARE dysfunctional. Just because they seem to have a really nice house it is important to remember how they got that nice house. The majority of people in the viewing world have NO help from tv shows, from companies donanting products to them. They have to work hard to be able to build a house and if they can not complete their home they probablywould have lost the home. While I realize they have investments etc... the fact remains they were overwhelmed with building a house and got a ton of help from other companies and TLC. We may not have seen a show on The Duggars if this had not happened.
I think that since JB constantly reminds people HOW many children they have, there is a lot of hints for lack of a better word right now, of getting it on with Michelle. It does lead people to view it as a show that is about sex and religion.
If they had say, 4-5 children tops I doubt we would see a show about The Duggars, least not on TLC.
Yep, I agree. If they only had 4-5 kids, I doubt they'd have their own TV show or be pimping out their family the way they have done. Now Josh & Anna have started their own truck load of kids. I remember the comment that Jim Bob made about baby #17 when she was still pregnant with #16 when the house had just been built.

But the only reason their large family works is that they are subsidized by TLC. Do you honestly think they would still be making it in this economy without the help of TLC? Therefore, they have to talk about something that makes people interested. In the engagement and wedding episodes all they talked about was sex.

What's wrong with sex? it's a beautiful and wonderful thing my girlfriend and I share with each other. We both were tested prior and share with only each other.
That's the problem with America, you love violent sports like tackle football and Mixed Martial arts, but the sex is taboo.

I couldn't agree more. America still has quite a hang up when it comes to sex or even nudity. Things that would be a non-issue elsewhere are such a big thing here. My goodness, you'd've thought the world was ending when Janet Jackson had her "wardrobe malfunction." (I'm American, btw.)

I am American also and agree. The reality is that by making things like sex and nudity such a taboo all we succeed in doing is making them more tempting...to see what all the fuss is about. It is the same thing with alcohol. I grew up being able to taste alcohol from an early age and it never was that big of a deal. My friends who weren't allowed went ballistic when they got away from home and could go out and party.
The Duggars are not about sex they are about sharing their family with the world. Their views of life and children may be alot different than yours, because just like them i believe that children are a gft from god! if the show was about sex dont you think that they would talk about it!? Ive have seen about every episode of 18kids and counting and i have not heared the word Sex come out of anyones mouth and by the way the proper word is Sexual Intercourse!
You wear rose colored glasses much? The Duggar's should not be content for their kids knowing when Michelle has a period, when she's fertile or how often they have sex. Too much info has been talked about on the show for me to believe that the kids are not hearing way too much about this subject. And the KIDS are the ones raising those babies. That is totally NOT fair and Jim Bob and Michelle are selfish beyond belief for strapping those kids with those adult responsibilities.
AJ741852 - When JB tells Josh that they got pregnant on Father's Day, that is talking about sex. Not only did he tell Josh, he told the entire WORLD. How did you miss that?
The duggars love children and how many children they have is none of anyones business and the kids are not stuck with adult responsibilities Jim Bob and Michelle are getting their kids ready for the real world because if you havent noticed your parent arent always going to be there to protect you! When they said they got pregnant on Fathers Day they were not purposely saying that and also they are all adults so they can have those types of conversatons but you wouldnt here them saying that around the younger children. the duggars are doign a great job.
Or Josh and Jim Bob's talk when he got married. Or the discussions of uncomfortable feelings. Or the recent ghost reinactment. Or the "would you like to have another one?" comments all the time. Or the fact that Michelle thinks that wearing a bikini when she cut the grass caused her neighbor to get a divorce (or whatever insanity she has said about that). Or that they do those strange side hugs as to not promote any desires. Or their reasoning for not dancing. Or the shots of Josh and Anna listening to a tape about intimacy while driving to their hotel. Or the comments from the Duggar children about "love marks" that Anna is going to have after the wedding (what???).
Those are just the most recent examples that pop into my mind.

Have you ever actually watched the show? There is a ton of talk about sex. From the "innaproprate feelings" to the discussion of JB's and Michelle's sex life, it's pervasive. Heck, the "modest" couple even gave us the date of their latest kid's conception!
As a side note, "I" is always capitalized, and spell check is a good thing.

Uh, yes they were "purposely" saying that. JB said "Michelle got pregnant on father's day." Sounds pretty purposeful to me. And if they are all adults, I would have died if my father in law had told my husband and I that my mother in law got pregnant on a particular date. That is usually not an image ANYONE wants to have in their heads for their PARENTS!! For people who claim to be so modest they are talking about R rated stuff ALL THE TIME!
Why don't you try watching the show for a while and then posting.

The girls are certainly stuck with adult responsibilities. How many teenagers do you know that cook every day for 20 people? Or laundry, cleaning, and raising their siblings? And they are getting them ready for the real world? Those kids know nothing about the real world, only what their parents want them to know. All they are preparing the girls for is a life of getting married and having as many as kids as possible. And they didn't purposely say they conceived on Father's Day? What was that, a slip of the tongue? That is just something your kids really don't want to know. The girls are well aware of Michelle's cycle so they know to look for signs of pregnancy.
The ONLY children I saw who were actually "surprised" at the er..."announcement" that Michelle was once again having another baby were the tiny tots. For so many of the people here who post "what a good thing" it is to be raised in the Duggar household I have a couple of questions for you.....Have you grown up in a fundamental household? Have you been been alienated from other children in your town? Do you know what it is like to dress differently, have others point fingers and laugh at you? Have you been raised to keep secrets in order to "keep the peace"? Raised in a household where corporal punishement is the norm? I realize these are more than just a few questions, but I really had to get this off my chest. It is easy to say that JB and Michelle are doing a wonderful thing , but it is a completely a different ballgame when you are stuck in this kind of household.
Something I noticed speaking of corpral punishment, but MIchelle has not been doing the spoon banging thing on the show. I wonder if she got so much heat from it she know longer does it in front of the cameras.

Oooh, I must have missed those episodes. When did she do that?
I kind of thought the spoon banging was sorta clever. You get your point across without actually having to use it. Of course to get to the point that merely gesturing with the weapon at hand is effective, you have to have instilled a healthy fear.
