I did not know that. It isn't mentioned on the show (I don't think).
But I confirmed it using Google Earth.
Personally, I'd worry about the smell, the quality of my water, the noise, vermin, and a host of other things.
I guess they couldn't afford the cost of land in another place.

I would not want to live that close to the dump.
I do not even like going to the dump.
I hope they do not consider having a show "Going to the Landfill".

Maybe they use a water conditioning system or they may have a bottled water cooler in their home for drinking. I have done both and even the worst water can be purified with the right system (we install these systems and I have seen the worst water in the world come out clear and sparkling as crystal and tasty too).
Smells you can get used to. We have a paper plant right in our back yard almost and the smell is bad if you aren't used to it but after living with it for 30 + years hey it doesn't bother you that much.

It is quite a large landfill, too.

That was funny! Maybe they should rename it the Duggar Landfill. At the rate they are multiplying they might as well rename the whole town Duggarville.

I wonder how many dirty diapers from the Duggar household went into that landfill.

After reading your post TH, I had a 70's flashback to that old commercial about the American Indian standing with a tear in his eye looking at all the garbage and pollution!
It's got to be an insane amount of diapers and styrofoam in that landfill!

Maybe it's not a landfill at all, but merely the Duggar family compost heap?
Seriously, I bet the Duggar's property was sold at a greatly discounted price and there weren't many people in line to buy it. Jim Bob probably got it at a great price, even though resale may be tough if not impossible.
Then again, he may already have a sure buyer lined up in the landfill itself. They will need to expand soon, the way the Duggars are going.
I have to think of Love Canal. And the Solley Road landfill outside of Baltimore. There's an issue the Duggars should google. That was frightening, and so many people were sick and dying from the Solley Road landfill's contamination. So many lost their homes and land. And now, a couple decades later, unsuspecting people are buying up the property again and building a new set of dream homes. Scary stuff.
And that commercial with the Native American crying that tear always made me feel so sad. I do remember that!

Oh my gosh! Love Canal, that brings back memories. I'd forgotten about that big story. Now it makes sense how they could buy so much land for cash. They probably take all their garbage and dump it themselves every week. Have you seen the new "Only you can prevent forest fires" commercials that they've started running? Smokey the bear is a morf of someone's friend or girlfriend who stands there lecturing the person who wants to leave the campfire not completely dowsed.

I have wondered about the resale value of this house. Who would buy this gigantic home with large boys/girls dorm rooms, instead of many smaller bedrooms ? And now, we learn it's near a landfill. Maybe a camping business or religious retreats or something like that ? Or even a juvenile detention home ? I know JB has mentioned the kids building houses on the property when they are adults, but this assumes their spouses are all in agreement with that plan (I personally would never want to live that close to my in-laws).

I think it would be a good idea if they went to the dump. They could be shown what a pile of diapers that their family alone contributed.(Along with their daily regular trash contributions.)

A landfill next door and living too close to your mother in law...........maybe my first marriage was a reality show 30 years ahead of its time!

I'd watch 18 goats and counting! I also bet all 18 of the goats would be able to make it in the 1 mile run! ( even the nanny goats!)

I don't know - there might be too many instances of "uncomfortable feelings" among the billy goats. It might get a Mature rating. Those little guys LOVE them some nanny goats!! (I raise goats too.)

I want goats! If my yard were bigger, I'd be getting me some Nigerian dwarf goats. I did grow up in an agricultural area though, and you're right. The antics of those animals might be too much for young eyes; it would certainly cause questions!

My goats have more self control than any Duggar any day! And they'd finish that race and recycle everything in sight. And they don't wear matching anything. And they have way too much sense to live next to a landfill. They'd much rather live IN one! But I would have to teach the chickens to squawk Nike at appropriate moments because goats are, well, um, goats......... I can see 18 Goats and Counting now.....

Coming up this week on 18 Goats and Counting: the goats visit the Bates Family and eat the new addition to their house.

18 Goats and Counting...I love it!!!
I seen on one episode where they were putting garbage into a dumpster like a business would have.
Table for Twelve even have a dumpster. The dad said something about in their town if you have so many living in a home you have to get a dumpster.

I suppose if it is your own, you can control what gets tossed in. Otherwise, dumpsters stink. I hope they can't smell the landfill

And do all the goats' names start with "J" or maybe "B" as in Billy Goat, Billy Bob, etc.? Or, fancy this, are they all non-conformist goats with their own individual names?

They are truly non-conformists.
Studs, Cookie, Phantom, Fonzie, Richie, Potsie, Laverne, Shirley, Sam, Frodo, Lucy, Ricky, Dobby Louise, Cinderella, Tinkerbelle, Buddy, Valentine, Caramel, Butterscotch, Stardust, Pinkie and Tiny Tim Tinkertoy.
But my three baby girl dogs are Simone, Sadie and Sookie. Is that a scary trend I should worry about?

Our house is near a very large airport..... We had new neighbors move in a few months ago.... One of them asked us..."how often do the planes fly over?" I told him...."so often you don't even notice it" which is true after a while...I remember the eerie silence after 9-11 when the planes weren't flying....I had gotten so used to hearing them....
probably the same with the Duggars and the landfill next door...they're used to it...and I doubt that they will ever move anywhere else, so it's probably no big deal if they have little to no re-sale value on their property...

The show has gotten out of hand. I do not like it that Laverne, Shirley and Lucy have to stay in the barn all day and look after their "buddies" Stardust, Pinkie and TTTinkertoy. They could be out going to goat school or playing in the pastures. And, what's with Cinderella always rolling her eyes at every comment? And, is there something wrong with Fonzie? He doesn't seem as outgoing as the others.

Fonzie has issues. He's a real butt-head at times. He's all about hairspray, and he sees himself as Mr. Politics.
And look at Cookie eating those flip flops! Bad Cookie! Blanket training for you!
On the next episode of 18 Goats and Counting we see Cookie eating the blanket....

My goats are Chaps, Gracie, Little Ree Ree (bad story about that name ) Apricot and little tiny Molly. All led by their sheep half-sister, Lilly, who is half sheep, half people (she thinks, just because she was raised by me), who is huge compared to them.

Oh yeah. My sheep are enormous! I never realized they get as big as they do! I thought they stayed little and cute! But they have such huge personalities and are the leaders of the pack, for sure. Then they sit back and look all innocent when the snickerdoodles hit the fan. But I'm on to 'em! I know what really goes on out there in the barnyard! The turkins tell me everything!

Aren't they just precious when they are born? Lilly was an orphan, her mother died the night after she was born. My husband brought her to the house and asked me if I thought we could bottle feed her (we have never done it before). I fell in love instantly and became her mom. She hadn't even nursed before her mother died so she got her first food from me. I had to work and work until she finally got the idea to suck. She was born right before an ice storm and it was so cold we had to keep her at the house, inside a lot of the time, so she followed every step I took. I cried all day when we finally took her out to be with the goats (she has no earthly idea she is a sheep - tries to hide from them when we take her in the sheep enclosure). She was so much fun - running through the house, jumping on the furniture, tormenting the cat. It was a mess and a lot of work but I would do it again in a minute.

Are y'all going to see the new movie "The Men Who Stare at Goats?" When I first saw the clip of this movie I thought it was a joke from George Clooney, but it's a real movie!

I am the woman at whom goats stare.
Turkins, also called churkins, or just plain fuglins, are half turkey, half chicken. They are a rare accident of nature and are an evolutionary wonder. They lay very large eggs that are very low in cholesterol. They are also very VERY ugly. My three are named:
Thing One Thing Two and Thing Three.
You didn't see that one coming.
They are very quiet and friendly and are far superior to chickens in every way.
There is much debate, well, maybe a little debate, about what they really are. Some say they are a breed of regular chicken called the Nekkid Neck. That will prolly bet me sent to Mod Land, so I "fixed" that word. That would mean they are not a cross breed or evolutionary delight, just plain old fugly. That, in itself, is a scary thought.
The lady who gave me the Thing Sisters swears they are actually turkins, or churkins, and, indeed, half chicken and half turkey. I know of other people who have accidently bred them by having overly amorous and brave roosters who are also blind and stupid. Well, stupid comes naturally.
I won't get into the big, gripping, heated and passionate churkin/chicken debate. All I will say is they are hideous and I love them.
Tongue was inserted firmly in cheek while writing the above post.

Getting back to the topic, wasn't their house built on commercial property? Not that the greater Springdale metroplex has had a lot of factories and chemical plants (I would assume), but aren't you running a risk anywhere when you try to live in a commercial area? I wonder how safe the ground water is? Plus, Springdale is the HQ of Tyson Foods, who have had some trouble over the year with their plants (but I don't know if Springdale is just their HQ or if they do any slaughtering there, too).

I don't know, they might not do any slaughtering in the same facility where they raise the chickens. Pilgrim's Pride is based in a small East Texas town outside of the Dallas area where they raise the chickens, but they truck them into the Dallas Metroplex somewhere for "processing." If you are ever driving into Dallas on I-30 early in the morning, you will get behind a truck packed full of poor chickens off to meet their maker.

There was a movie this summer called FOOD,INC. that showed what goes on at chicken farms (I got the point after five minutes but they kept showing chicken abuse over and over). I wouldn't want to live within a couple miles of one of those places. But, where can you go? I live just outside of Detroit, so who am I to quibble with where the Duggars live.

I have to ask - and certainly no offense meant towards your own little turkins, but, do they make good eatin? I love turkey and chicken both and wonder what kind of flavor a turkin might have.....
My grandparents had a farm and we visited alot over the summer. Grandma had her laying hens but also raised others for food. It was kind of odd. I wouldn't say her laying hens were pets, exactly, but we knew they wouldn't be killed but that the younger ones would once they got big enough. We knew not to get attached to them.
