I have to admit I'm glad they're getting a web site. I was curious about them and searched a few weeks ago for more info but didn't find much.

I checked on the website, and it is administered by Josh Duggar, and the admin's email is Josh's at the used car lot...I guess things are slow at work.

I'm glad they have a website too - I've been looking for more information on them and couldn't find anything but a couple of news articles. I have to say, I admire them more than the Duggars - not exactly sure why. Maybe they seem more real and not as holier-than-thou than the Duggars. IDK.

I think if they are so deeply in with the Duggars now that Josh is handling their website that the warm and fuzzies won't last for long.

Well since Josh is designing their website it is no wonder that the site happens to be grammatically incorrect. The Bates? No! It is either "The Bates Family", or "The Bateses." The use of the term "The Bates" implies that their last name is Bate. When one designs a website for all the world to see, so to speak, then one should carefully edit the site to be sure that such glaring errors do not occur. It really makes Josh look ignorant, and by association, the Bateses as well.

When a noun ends in th letter s, an es is added when pluralizing the word. Bates becomes Bateses, Jones becomes Joneses, Harris becomes Harrises etc. Bateses is a cumbersome spelling I agree, therefore Bates Family is a better way to refer to a group of people with the surname Bates. As for "Bates'", that too is incorrect. The plural possessive of Bates is Bateses'. Nowhere in that last sentence was there a need to make the Bateses into a possessive noun.

So if we are talking about just one member of the family such as Gil, would it be Gil Bates' house or Gil Bates's house?

It would be Gil Bates' house. The appostrophe is to show the possessive. Gil Bates owns the house, so it is Gil Bates' house.

Chris Lukas' house--same thing

It's done this way because your last name ends in an S. If your last name didn't end in an S, it would be different.

Johnny Appleseed's house--appostrophe S

I noticed this error, too. Most people don't notice, though, or don't care.

There isn't anything on this site other than the front page. Kind of obvious that Josh Duggar did the design because the only email or links whatsoever go to either Jim Bob's or Josh & Anna's site.

I think it is more about not knowing it is wrong than not noticing.

Because Bateses looks strange, people assume it would just be Bates.

I, too, am happy to learn they will have their own web site up and running soon. I really like the Bates family and look forward to learning about them and their way of life. I have said it a couple of times before; they seem like a genuine, down to earth, solid family. Very sweet and humble with spirit!

If you go to "whois.net" or any domain provider you can look up who owns any site and who manages it,

Calico, I think that the point of this thread is simply to point out that the Bates do have a website now. A lot of people are interested in this family.

Hi Calico, I am Cat, nice to meet you. I think you joined about the time I was having my 47th surgery. I am now back home and wanted to say welcome to the group!

Sometimes we do get off the original topic but we do generally get back around to it. We often have several topics going at once, but that is what makes this an interesting group! lol

I would love to have you come and chat with us at the breakroom and tell us about yourself. It is a great place to talk about things besides the Duggars/and or dig into deeper things that concern ourselves and the fundy movement.

Great meeting ya and as I alaways say,

Keep Smilin' ,Cat Big Grin

I dont think their home remodel is done either (based on TWOP comments) so it doesn't surprise me that the Duggars started another project to "help" their fellow man and have left it hanging.

Does anyone find it strange that Josh was able to totally update his ja20.com web site right after his baby was born (after it hadn't been updated in months before the baby was born)? I expect he got some help. And, the Bates family site needs help, too.

Well, for me, I get tired of seeing the rapid degradation of the English language. And yes, I'm an equal opportunity nitpicker. Smile

It should be interesting to see what they choose to put up on their website.

I've been a secretary for almost 30 years. If the name has an "s" in it, then it is "Bates'" not "Bates'es". If there was no "s", then it would be "Bate's".

I'm a writer and we use AP Style, and that's also the way we would use the apostrophe with a name that ends in "s." Bateses would be seen as incorrect.

Many people upload photos from blackberries onto things like Facebook. You don't have to have a computer in front of you.

Our Youth pastor had photos of his new babies (he is up to 4 now) on his family website within 24 hours. Just the techno world we live in.

Priorities?? My Word, putting pics of my new baby for all of my friends to see would be a priority. Pride -- yes most Dads feel that.

All the men I know do good to have a photo on their cell phone of their new baby. They are too busy and overwhelmed with the whole thing to think about sitting down and updating a website so the world could see his handiwork. Plus, their wife would be a little upset that they were more focused on updating a website, Facebook, whatever, instead of helping out with the baby, housework, etc.

No, when my babies were sleeping I did the laundry, the cooking and the housework so I could devote myself to my kid when she was awake.

Since Josh appears to be the Webmaster of his little universe and somewhat tech savvy (a skill his sisters will never enjoy) and since he's certainly aware of his "celebrity" I wonder if his ego secretly drives him to spend any time lurking on the many Duggar/fundie related discussion boards? Perhaps he's found the gem of a site devoted to Freeing Jinger among other things, or the Facebook pages pretending to be his sister. The boy would certainly have time on his hands since childcare isn't in his job description as head of the house nor does he have a real job. I know the family are aware that not everyone agrees with their beliefs but the sometimes scathing criticism of their beliefs and lifestyle would have to come as a bit of a shock. Perhaps he only reads the supportive messages on certain like-minded boards? Not that you would expect either Josh or JB to take any of the variety of views expressed on board themselves, it wouldn't be in their all-knowing character.

Now I admit, I can be off in my errors on the boards, but I have noticed those who are home schooled, have a terrible knowledge of grammor and also do not speak correctly. I cannot stand when I hear people on television say aint. It sounds ignorant to begin with in my opinion but it sounds far worst when I hear people say it on televsions. Now, as far as the Bates family goes, there is something a bit more natural and not so pretenstiouse and hypocritical. but again that is my opinion. They seem much more down to earth and at least at one time were not trying to be something they are not. I get the feeling Michelle trys to compete with others with their pregnacies

Home schooling takes commitment, time, and hopefully knowledge of the subject matter. It's entirely possible to have a top notch home education, and also to have a terrible one. I for one recently worked with a 21 yo home schooled girl, and she thought Hitler was a communist Russian in WWII. So yeah.

bustyst, I have never met any, but your correct it does not mean they are not out there, but some have a very distorted picture of real facts. Also to others please forgive me for not being so perfect as the spell police are. I actually type most times in the dark as the bright lights bother my eyes. to most it would be regular lights but for me the lights on bother my eyes. I also wear sunglasses even at times during the day in the house.

My sistser homeschooled her kids up until this year. She has one in HS, one in Middle school, and some younger ones in elementary. she told me recently about an experience on of the older ones had in English. (I can't remember which one it was) Evidently the students had a writting assignment of some sort.
When the teacher graded everyones papers she was disappointed in most of the grades. (taking spelling and grammar into account as well as content). However, my niece scored higher than anyone - by a large margin. The teacher talked to her when she handed n back the paper. She said something along the lines of "I thought you said you were homeschooled?" As if being homeschooled meant she would not be able to write properly - especially with regard to grammer/parts of speach/proper use of tenses, that sort of thing. She asked my niece who actually taught her these things and my niece said, "my mother." When my niece told my sister, they got a big kick out of it.
(my sister was always really picky about proper use of grammer even when we were in school together so her teaching her kids so well didn't surprise me)

So, while I do agree that some homeschoolers do not get as good of an education as some
PS kids, going to PS doesn't necessarily mean they will do well or that their education is superior - in this case the homeschooler actually did far superior to the PS kids ( in the PS setting no less). There are many variables that should be taken into consideration so I think each situation should be considered individually and I hesitate to make blanket statements - either pro or con.

But as how homeschooling relates to the Duggars, I just can't fathom how Michelle could possibly be providing an adequate education to the children! I'm college educated and fairly well read, but there are many many things I wouldn't have the first idea of how to teach.

Science for instance.

I know that this is a rehash of conversations from former threads, but it boggles my mind. I really try to give them the benefit of the doubt for many things, but education...I just can't. There is no way in heck Michelle is able to teach these young people all they need. And you could say that the older daughters are helping, but what do they know? They know everything that Michelle knows and not a whit more. And that is not enough.
