I just watched a program titled "Encyclopedia Galactica" reportedly from Carl Sagan's Cosmos Cosmos series. However there were frequent references to events as late as 1998. I also noticed that Carl Sagan did not appear on screen as the narrator discussed missions to the Moon and the Clementine flyby mission.

Then I began to wonder if it was even Carl Sagan speaking. I waited until the end and watched the credits. There were credits from the BBC and The Science Channel, and a credit for narrator... and it wasn't Carl Sagan! The copyright date was 1999 (I think). What's going on here? Why did they name this episode "Encyclopedia Galactica" from Cosmos if it was a new production? Anyone know more about this?

NOTE: The episode aired between 9 pm and 10 pm ET on The Science Channel.

Well, I guess it was an episode of a show called "The Planets." The onscreen episode guide still reads "Cosmos."

I wonder if they purposely wanted a narrator who sounded like Carl Sagan.
