The China Law blog has this information on how you can help with earthquake relief. (A caveat: I tried the Red Cross Society of China web site and wasn't able to connect, possibly because of the volume of users.) China's Earthquake: How You Can Help Posted by Dan on May 12, 2008 at 12:19 PM Discussion: Comments (15) : TrackBacks (1) : Linking Blogs : Add to del.icio.us Shanghaiist just posted on how you can help the victims of China's recent earthquake. My Chinese aquaintences asked me if I contributed money to this. My response was, did you contribute to the disaster in Myanmar or Katrina in New Orleans? - they replied - "but those were in foreign countries, why would we contribute?" China has got more than enough money to take care of this, they have more cash than the US. They are just being smart by figuring a way to get more money from the west. Actually, I was in the area when this happened, it wasn't as bad as it looked on TV, and was told they only spent a small fraction of what was obtained.

If I were you, I would donate $1 or some small amount, so I do not have to lie when folks ask me this sensitive (not sensitive in Chinese culture) question. It would be politically correct.
Chinese would get a lot of help from the US carrier close by to provide urgent help and it would save a lot of life. A stupid decision on the Chinese government.
Personally I donated to American Red Cross as I do not trust how the local government distribute the money. I have a friend who went to the area and saw the disaster. It is not the same as you described. It could be you're far away from the epicenter.
When I win the lottery (coming soon I bet), I will donate all to help Chinese. Why? I think there is enough money to go to Africa (like Bill's foundation) and the Chinese poor in the remote area is the neglected. When the poor becomes the middle class, they will help the outside world better as they're in the poverty before.

Wow, that's cold. The non-government relief efforts in China have played a big role in helping earthquake victims.
