I was watching a show on how the Soviet Union built up thousands of there t 54s and i was wondering if there ever was a WWIII, who would win?, i think that the outslaught of the Soviet tanks and just huge numbers would simply overwhelm the NATO positions, plus the Soviets had the bmp, the durable AK-47, plus droves of fighters, and large amounts of nukes, still America could have put up a fight with superior quality, but still Soviet numbers were too great
i think that one of the big things is specifically when does this war take place.
I think that the soviets would have won in the 50's or 60' and maybe into the early 70's. once you are into the late 70's and 80's the technology of nato would have defeated the soviets. the ability to destroy tanks with aripower would have won the war for nato. the a-10 warthog would have been the hero of such a war.
The Soviets would not have overwhelmed NATO at any time. We would have fought a series of delaying actions intended to delay and inflict losses while our reserves mobilized. The US had prepositioned vehicles, weapons, etc waiting for troops to be airlifted in to use them and most NATO reserves could be called up in relatively short order. The Soviets would have gained ground initially but they would have ground to a halt as resistance increased. Then, having expended themeselves in the first assaults, they would be driven back until they had fallen onto their own reserves. Then there would have been a long and bloody war which I doubt the Soviets could have won. A lot of the WWIII books of the time made it sound like the war would be over in a matter of a few days or weeks but that was a bunch of bunk. Short of a nuclear holocaust, it would have been years.
Plus the soviets didnt have as many tanks as u think. They kept all thier tanks on active duty county the T-55s during the 80s. After the first line troops were destroyed their second and 3rd lines use older equipment. Eventually they would have been pushed back germany would have been reuinted sooner countires east of their would have been free'd.
