Hello, Don't be afraid to go up to people and introduce yourself. I know that is a hard thing to do but my nephew is a 5 year and he is a LP. He just walks right up to people and says hi all the time. My sister insisted he go to a normal pre-school and he is doing well. He does tend to go inside himself at time but for the most part he is just a lovely outgoing little boy.
I will tell you what I always tell my nephew. If people can't accept you for who you are, then forget about them. They are not decent people if you have to work very hard at making friends with them.
Is there maybe a LP group in your area where you can meet some friends? Many times average size people go as well so you might find some fun new people to hang out with. I am hearing impaired and enjoy meeting people who have similar problems as I do just simply because it helps to get a perspective on how they deal with certain issues. It might help you too.
How tall are you crosenblum ? I am 5' and sometimes it can be frustrating, but I love it when people think I am only 16 years old and I am really 33 years old. My 15 year old birth daughter and 17 year old foster daugher looks older then I because they are 5'7 & 5'8.
When I was in school people use to call me Bridget the Midget, and my name is not Bridget. I was the shortest kid in High School and I did not stop growing until I hit 20. I remember in high school I was assigned a top locker and had to pay another child to switch with me. It was tough at times, but I love it now that I am older and get to have lots of fun with it when it comes to my nine children. All but two of the kids are taller then I. The kids run from 8 to 17, and the 8 & 9 year old are almost the same height as me. People always think I am one of the kids!
Hi there, I'm 40 years old, and only 4'11". I hated being told I looked younger, but now that I've reached the ripe old age of 40, I appreciate looking younger because of my height( or lack thereof, lol). Yes, I have to have my driver's seat pushed all the way forward, and yes I have to sit on a cushion to see over the dash. And sometimes I have to climb on my kitchen counter to reach my upper cabinets, but you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. I like who I am, and that's what's important. By the way. my sister is the same heeight as I am, and we have a cousin who is 4'10". And we're all very happy with who we are.
my mom let me drive her car in a parking lot i could not see the road over the dash sittin up str8 and couldnt touch petals i tryed slidein down to touch petals head was like middle of seat couldnt see but i have a learning disabilty i do try but i dont think i will understand any of it i will try tho if i do drive ill have to get the stuff too i think cushion are not good u might slide off i use a chair for my kitchen very top shelf i need to stand on the counter me and my aunt are the only short people in both my sides of family my brother is 6 foot my mom is 5'6 dad is near my brothers height ect btw im 6 inches shorter then u im 4'5 :P i wish i could meet people offline these heights

Well said! I was lucky in that when I was younger (teens) I always came accross as much older than my age and used it to my advantage to get into bars etc If I was challenged about my age I would simply say "Oh because I am small for my age you are not going to let me in..." 9 times out of 10 it worked. Now I am 37 I have for some bizarre reason kept my young looks (my fiancee calls me Peter Pan). I think a lot is to do with attitude - if you feel young at heart it shows. Apart from being pulled over by the police in my car when they think it is a kid driving, I wouldn't change a thing.

richw4, I agree 100%. You brought back some memories. When I was 15 years old I fixed myself up and I made myself look older. I would go to the bars with some older friends and I had no problems with getting in. I used being small to my advantage. It was fun back then, but I don't want to recommend it to the younger population today.
Now being 33 years old, I look no more then 18 years old and some say I look 16. I love it and I think it is cool that everyone thinks I am one of the kids. I think that sometimes I even act like one of them and I have to remember that I am the adult.
Hi All: i'm 38 and i'm 4'11, I know what you all are going though, I have been there myself many times, it's not how small we are, It's the tought that counts, All my life i have called alot of nasty names, Of course I'm from Canada, ppl say we Canada are friendly yes at time we are, but in real life no, Also i have Noonan Syndome, It's like Down Syndome... it have more heart problems....

It lokslike you could have went to the teacher who made the assigments and said you have a problem with your locker assignment. You should not have had to PAY to switch lockers that is horrible.
Hello all I'm 4'11 on a good day. lol I don't have any type of condition I'm just vertically challenged. My Grandmother was the same exact height and I remember asking why she had blocks mounted to the pedals of her car. I found out why years later.
My name is Anneke, I am 31, I was born with spina bifida, and I am 4'11".
I have to admit that yes, there are some downfalls to being short, i.e., going to the grocery store and not being able to reach something that is high up on a shelf.
But no matter how tall or short you are you should never be afraid to go up and talk to a random person. Because I feel it is their fault if they don't want to talk to you just because you are different from them.
Hi!!! I'm 25 and 4'10", and I work with kids, which makes it a lethal combination, lol. (Try having a kindergartener tower over you) I usually don't mind it too much, but on a bad day it can get to me. I think it's funny how sometimes people will try to insult me because I'm short and they actually expect me to get offeneded by it. I'm not a LP or anything, just short. People think it's weird, but I sometimes don't notice just how tiny I am unless I see a picture of myself or I sit with my legs stretched out in front of me. Everyone else always seems to make a bigger deal of it than I do. Whenever people used to bother my mom for being short, she used to say "Yeah, I'm thinking of suing the city for building the sidewalk so close to my [rear]." HAHA!!

I am 34 and only 4'10". When I finished growing in the 6th grade I became devistated. Because of my being short I was the butt of all the jokes. Unfortunately being over weight runs in the family. So not only did I get teased about being short but being "fat" as well. It is like what Amy said, on you 5 pounds you don't even notice but on LP it is very different and very noticable. In my first marriage the man was 6'4" and used his height to intimidate me to get what he wanted, my current hubby,5'2" is just wonderful and loves me for who I am. I tease him that we look like Jack Sprat and his old lady, lol. Being short has it advantages, but I think I notice more of the disadvantages.Thankfully none of my children are short. I am the only short one in the family, everyone else is above 5'4". My children love haveing a short mom. When my son introduces me to his friends he tells them in advance to watch it, TNT comes in little packages.lol
i am short and disabled. i am 4'8". i have spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Yes i to find it difficult in the dating world and with friends. I drive a vehicle now. It's not easy getting things modified for a short person. Getting your license is another story. Well all my worries are over.. I am gettin married in Sept and will be in the country. I have a home business and will have 2 half time jobs. So i guess life is looking up.
Hello. I am 46, and am 4' 9". I never considered myself a 'little person' by the technical standards...but obviously, I am little. I have 3 daughters, ages 22, 20 and 15. All were very large babies...and all are short in growth like me(actually, I am shorter than the 3 of them).
I relate so much to the Roloffs in so many ways, it is unbelievable. My family is not 'into' the show like I am...but when they walk by as I am watching I will say "Oh, I so 'get' that!!!". Things high up in the grocery stores, not being able to see over a dash, items being put away in tall cabinets. Geesh...the things we go throug to 'fit' in the tall world! I also love their kitchen remodel. My first husband and I did a kitchen remodel, and although counters were not done as low as the Roloffs, it was pretty close. I loved that kitchen! Anyways, I just wanted to chime in, that I too am a shortie as well. And, for anyone who knows, because I am 4'9", would I be able to join the "Little People of America" groups? Just curious.
Oh...and I should add...that while both my husbands (ex and current) are considered of average height, they are both rather short for men. 5' 7" and 5' 8".

I am just glad you are here. My daughter that died, my other daughter's twin had both of those things. The spina bifida was so severe that her legs were paralized. It was also so severe, that 20 years ago, there was no hope for her-the Drs. said IF she survived one week they would attempt surgery. She lived only 1 day.
Hi all!,I'm 15 years old going br 16 soon.I'm Hard of Hearing. I suffered with postlingually, sensorineural hearing loss for 3 years now. I'm getting cochlear implant in July. I have started to learn Sign language. my speech still same. i have no problem with social[social issues] But i have some problem with people that who doesn't accept us[disabled ppl]
I also have Spina Bifida, I'm under 5', not exactly how tall though. I think people have such a bad misconception of people with disabilities, & I've seen a lot of bad stuff written just recently about people with spina bifida. I have the most severe form of it & use a wheelchair full-time. However, I did not have hydrocephalus, so I'm lucky in that regard. I had the surgery to close my back when I was 8 hours old. It's really not as big of a deal as people think. I live 100% independently, drive a car, have 2 college degrees, a professional career, & live a very active life. Being able to walk isn't & shouldn't be the benchmark of having a productive, successful life. That's not to say that I never have struggles that come from my disabilty, of course. Dating is a huge issue. There's no reason I can't have a relationship, get married, & even have kids. However, people are so stuck in their own assumptions that they don't realize that & don't give me a chance. That to me is a much bigger issue than anything physical I have dealt with.

You're lucky though and obviously very strong. I hate the misconceptions about people with disabilities. In a huge coincidence, when my mom was pregnant with me, our neighbor was also pregnant with a little girl. She's two days older than me and was born with spina bifida, but her mother refused to let the doctors perform the surgery to close her spine. I don't know why. She's been in some kind of institution ever since, I believe. I don't think her parents ever even brought her home because they didn't believe she could live anything close to a normal life. And this was 1988! If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have thought people would've had that mindset in such a modern time. They still live next to us, but whenever my mom asks about their daughter they just mumble something and change the subject. It's weird.
Hi!!! My name is Alan. 35 years old and I'm about 4'10". I'm kind of in between a lp and normal. I have 7 brothers and sissters. And none of them are a lp. Neither are their kids. And I've been going through depression about this for the past 6 years. And I would like to know on how to meet some group of lp. I live in oregon. Just like the family from the show. I live in Beaverton, which isn't too far from were the show is filmed from. I hope some of you might help me out with this. I'm running out of ideas on how to either meet the Roloffs or just lp. Thank you and God Bless.
[QUOTE]I am 54 years old and 4'8 1/2. I weigh 103 lbs. I have 7 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. All of them are taller than me except the 7 year old and 4 year old. The others are 15, 13, 2 are 11, 10 and 9. I have two daughters of average height and one sister of average height. I was always the butt of jokes when growing up. Whenever I was told I couldn't do something I was furious and determined to do whatever I wanted to do. I'm still that way today. I joined a police force when told I was too small. I worked there for over 6 years. I went back to school and received my bachelors degree when I was 39 years old. I was told I couldn't teach-the kids would humiliate me or try to kill me. I presently teach headstart-a program for 4 and 5 year olds of low income families, much like pre-kindergarten only with income guidelines. I will have my masters degree in December. I have written a series of books. I am considering owning a chain of businesses. I am seeking sponsors. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to solicit sponsors for a business. People usually don't take me seriously until I prove to them I can accomplish my goal. I think that is a disadvantage for little people. On the other hand, sometimes I can pay half price to attend functions that my daughters have to pay full price for. That really makes my day!!
I understand how you all feel. I am 50 years old and 4'8". Which makes me taller then a lot of little people but shorter then all the adults I come across. In school I was alway the shortest and the other children would want to pick me up and carry me around school. As an adult it sometimes seems as if people treat you more like a child or less intellegent than the average height person. Does it ever get on your nerves when a tall person goes and says boy I wish I was your height? They have no idea of the problems of reaching things even in your own house when the stove, counter tops and cabinets are made for normal size adults not to mention finding clothes that aren't to childish or youthful.
see i'm not a little person but i am disabled cuz of a skiing accident so now i'm only 4'9" but before i was only 5'0" but even though i got shorter and that happened i don't let it ruin the way i live my life or take care of my children
I'm in my 30's and I'm only 4'11. I'm not a dwarf, but that doesn't mean I don't get the meanness from people. That's adults and kids both. I have accepted that god made me this way for a reason, but sometimes I just get annoyed. I am the second oldest and I'm the smallest in my family. I've always been this way and well let's just say my fiance is 6ft and he loves my size and I can't complain. I wish people would just accept people who are different.
Hey ~ First of all I'd like to thank you for sharing your stories. I love to see how even though we all come from different walks of life and we're all different ages, we can come together to talk about these issues! Second, I'm sorry for your loss momofmeg. And the rudeness you've endured at school bajen. And to the countless # of others who have been wronged by society. Seeing some lightheartedness on this forum is great, cleodog37, swittlinger & others! I myself am 27, 5'5". And you know what? I'm too short to do some things! I too am "pleasingly plump." But I know that I'm blessed with what I've got and I think of my friends on this forum every day.
I'm a 43 female and am 5'3"-- and still get some rude people who tell me, "God, you're soooooooo SHORTTT!! One person was even a former manager of mine.
Give me a break already-- I have to hold myself back from saying something back that I'll regret later.
I work with a guy who is 5'3-- and he is just as much a regular guy as any of the taller guys.
If you move over to North Eastern Pennsylvania- you'll find alot of us native to this area of the U.S. are alot more shorter than the rest of the United States. I don't know if it is because of the poor nutrition here, chemicals they spray all over the place here for decades, or because alot of the people here are from Italian descent-- from the part of Italy where woman are on average only 4'8 and men are 5'2.
My ancestors immigrated here from Perugia Italy back in the day-and we are all short. My sister is 4'9.
If anyone has an issue with you being short- or "Little People", tell them to 'get over it!"
Thank you for sharing your stories on here. I admire your courage in life. I am sure some of you had trouble telling the world your stories. Bless you all.

You can tour their farm in pumpkin season. Go there-I bet if Matt saw you he would come up and talk to you.

Littlebit- once when my daughter was in the hosp. for one of her many surgeries, I met a couple where the man was about 6'3" and the wife 4' 10". they were so cute together! I imagine though she may have had to have a c-section to have that baby-as he was big for his age. their baby was having a hernia repaired. so not too serious a surgery.
im 13 and my two friends are 5'9" and 5'8" and inm only 5'3" im not saying im that short but when i stand right next to my 2 friends its crazy im always looking up at them sometimes my friends kneel so they r at my hight! ITS NOT THAT FUNNY lol i still love them tho its just frustrating that im way shorter then them
yeah same here but my friend was 5'7 and im only like 5 foot and a half inch and the shortest of my group of friends has now grown taller than me so yeah feelin kinda bad here!
Hi. My wife and I are both physically challenged. I'm 5'4", Cerebral Palsy (nild on the left side). My wife is 4'5" with bad hips from birth. We have a "normal" 2.5 yr old little girl. My wife and both have bacelor degrees and I work as a cash register programmer and my wife is doing a little class work to be a teacher in the fall. I invest in the stock market when I get the chance.
See, what you guys should do is have her order alcohol whenever you two go out to a resturant so men will know that she is over the age of being legal.
I'm 5'1. In elementary school I grew fast and was always one of the tallest kids is class. In junior high my growth slowed down and I was average size as compared to the other kids. By high school I had pretty much stopped growing and was one of the shortest kids. Weird huh?
My height never bothers me except at the grocery store when things I want are too high. But that's okay because the stores lose out when they don't think of short people. My philosophy is to high or no price tag, no buy!
thnx corwin ive been practicing. there has been a few druggys at my school and i wanted 2 b prepared. yeah ive lost a lot of people 2 drugs. i like your philosophy

hehe..I am like 5'6 in a half..i always feel tall looking down on my 5'2" sis who is 24 and my 5'4" mom..haha

she does do that some (wine-she took a wine tasting class) and is always carded. but then I AM carded and I definetely look well over 21. It is the law here to card-no matter how old a person looks.
Originally posted by miss_corwin: Well said and I won't either..Too many people in my family have had alcoholism. I do not want to go through that.
It runs in my family also but I will drink occasionially-nmever to an excess-I have never even been "Buzzed" even when you feel a "buzz" as many say legally you are drunk and should not drive.
I see nothing wrong with drinking alcohol-as long as a person is of age and knows how to keep themselves under control-and knows their limit and does not go over their limit.
After all, Jesus's first miracle was turning water into wine- but I can't imagine Jesus being drunk. I am sure he would have used self control.
Alcohol, Yuck! My dad gave me a sip of beer as a kid when I was really thirsty at a little league game. There was nothing else to drink so I had to have that awful taste in my mouth for an hour or so until I got home and could wash it out. I think that cured me from wanting to drink. YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give me a caffiene free diet coke any day.
