I think maybe Discovery is so broke that they:
  • can't afford to fix their now-errant commercials,
  • laid off the guy who can pull ads for new episodes in real-time, and
  • nobody can come back to the network to do it because gas is so high.


I think that Discovery's whole "ah well, they'll get over it" mentality is WRONG. It's BAD public relations. Really good way to get new viewers. Roll Eyes

I joined a year ago but when I tried to sign in it wouldnt let me.

So I rejoined to say this....'WHY'???? Confused

I am a self employed welder/ fabricator and I got home a couple of hours early to catch the new episode and all I get for passing up 3 more ours of daylight work ($285.00) is a re-run????

Who do I send the bill to??? LOL

Mythmod, I beseech thee. Could you please see your way through the flotsam and jetsam in this forum, and at least provide us a modicum of a hint as to the nature of tonight's programming change. I would appreciate it greatly. We all do our own stunts here, and so we'd like to be granted a little insight! Thank you.

Life is hard, and we look forward to little things that give us the strength to get through the day. Looking forward to the Viral Hour kinda got me through today. Canceling as late as 24 hours ago would have been harsh, but understandable. I am looking forward to a suitable explanation for why we had to be disappointed in this way. I am prepared to eat crow if there *is* a good explanation, but "well, it's the Olympics" would not qualify.

That is really messed up. All of us fans have been waiting weeks to see the new episodes and Discovery screws us over. If it wasn't for us, they wouldn't have a channel or a show. Its bad enough we can't have new episodes every week, only a few at a time. Wonder if Jamie and Adam knew of this mess.

Why would the Olympics effect programming on the discovery channel?
Man vs wild is still airing, why not mythbusters?

Actually, I think that the technical glitch theory is the only one that works. The Olympics have been anticipated for too long for DSC to postpone the show because of them at this late date, I doubt that it's a person, and not a computer, that plays the episodes,the fact that the episodes are shot far in advance rules out any theory invlolving a problem with the MBs or the cameramen, and DSC is not evil enough to do this just to spice up the forums.

Ah geez sorry guys. Discovery had just cancelled the showing of Capricorn One in order to bring you Flash Gordon. I think it has something to do with the Rangers coming back on the Red Sox.

For those thinking this has something to do with the Olympics -- are you crazy? Discovery (along with everyone else) knew the Olympic schedule. The only thing remotely worth losing ratings over was Phelps, and they're not showing his race until 10 PM EST.

Also, they've been advertising this for weeks on TV/radio/etc -- that isn't cheap.

What more likely happened (given that the content of at least the viral episode contained a lot of content from outside sources) is that there was some kind of last minute copyright/licensing issue. For those who aren't aware, Discovery is notorious for this. Dirty Jobs had to completely change their theme song for a number of episodes due to a licensing issue with Faith No More (Google it). They changed the theme song almost overnight on a number of episodes -- even classic ones.

What probably happened is that they thought they had rights to some video they didn't. Rather than risk the lawsuit they cut the episode to reedit.
