True.. but how come the baseball doesn't travel off of the bat at a faster rate of speed?

i was happy that they accually did that they already prooved it would break the bat at that speed also they shot it at a metal pole it is busted and another thing in each base ball game after the ball is hits and/or gets dirt on it they get out a new ball i have seen the catcher change balls with the umpire tons of times.

quote: Maybe it sounds wrong, but if you do a bit of research in a physics book instead of a Batman comic book, you will find it is, indeed, correct. One of the formulae that you learn in Traffic Accident Investigation class is that the force generated when two objects collide is the inverse of the sum of the forces. In other words, it is not 50 MPH +50 MPH = 100 MPH. When two vehicles traveling at 50 MPH collide head-on, it is the same as one vehicle hitting a concrete wall at 200 MPH. Just because it seems wrong to you does not make it wrong. Do some study, and you will find it is correct.
No other factors matter. So if a car doing 50mph hits a unicycle doing 50mph, it is the same as the car hitting a concrete wall at 200mph?

I wanted to see how long it would take them to rip the hide off a ball if they kept using the same one. My friends and I have done this, but it took at least a week probably more but i can't quite remember. Of course this can't happen in the MLB because balls are swapped out constantly.

It's not a matter of the speed, it's a matter of the sudden change in velocity.
Let me use this analogy: You accelerate a car to on hundred miles per hour and coast. vs. You accelerate to a hundred miles per hour and suddenly get slammed in a different direction.
What happened in the episode was the sheer speed was ripping the hide off. NOT the ball's impact with the bat and it's resulting speed breaking the hide.
At those speeds, the bat could split the leather, just like falling on your head could split your scalp.
