Exactly. A retry is in order (especially for such a great myth).
Snatch straps are flexible like rope, light weight and have high strength typically 20-30,000 lbs. They allow stretching to keep them from breaking like the cable. Think of acceleration as force over time, at the wrong angle the cable is trying to accelerate the car almost instantaneously- with s snatch strap that impulse is spread over a much larger time frame.
Search for 'snatch strap' on-line and you'll find them. They are used largely in off-road recovery situations.
Besides- this is a great opportunity to bring back that great 'flying-nocturnal-echo-locating-mammal-mobile' that you guys built

I believe they used Spectra cable in the episode, although I'm not sure what the breaking strength was. Spectra is essentially the strongest fiber in the world. You're not going to get anything stronger than it with increasing the size and/or number of load bearing fibers.
