I love me some mythbusters however I have to agree with setha2001. When I watched the episode the first thing I thought of was that the coating was what didn't react with the Diet Coke. The only explanation offered if I remember correctly was that "these candies are made by the same manufacturer however this one has a smooth suface". Regualar Coke is also made by Coca Cola however the results would have been dramatically different. I think perhaps a better way may have been so somehow lightly buff the surface of the Mentos to try to get rid of some of the pits that allow nucleation. I am by FAR not a scientist however I can't imagine the difference would be noticeable. Not a big deal though. On the whole I think the Mythbusters did a GREAT job as always as a whole, still offered the best explanation I have heard about how this happens. No one can be an expert on all subject matter and as a whole I think the Mythbusters do a lot better than anyone else could or would with such a wide variety of topics.

I'm sorry that this on the same page with the Diet Coke and Menos but heres a great myth idea.Who has seen Christmas Vacation? Remember when Clark sprys his sled with the non stick spray.Does that make a sled go faster in real life.If not a sled how about a pair of skis,or a snowboard,a sufboard,or even ice skates.

I think the experiment was accurate enough to show what interacts between the soda and Mentos.

In this episode the lads try to make a smoke bomb. Here is a recipe for an excellent white smoke flameless smoke bomb that produces a vast volume of smoke.

The three ingredients are: Sugar, Sodium Chlorate(weed killer), and Ammonium Chloride 9sal amoniac). Ammonium chloride is a white solid (powder) that changes phse from solid to gas directly (Sublimation) it needs heat to do so. The heat is provided by the optimum mix of sugar with sodium chlorate. This burns quickly much like gunpowder and care must be taken to allow gasses to escape, that is do it in an open shallow tin not in a closed vessel. When the optimum mix is achieved 60/40 ish mix in enough amonium chlorate so that when activated by putting a fizzing match head into the top of the mixture the smoke mixture produces smoke without flame. Too much ammonium chlorate and it wont work, not enough and flame is produced and less smoke. It cannot be lit with a match directly it must be the fizzing just struck part. A hot wire also works. The smoke produced is very dense, pure white and a vast amount. Try it and see.......

Because one of the major factors in the reaction is the sweetner-which normal coke doesn't have.

I recently did an experiment to find what temperature reacts the best. It would be cool if the mythbusters tried it out

That was an awesome episode. Have you considered trying caffeine free diet coke? If my family had some mentos, I would try it myself, but we don't have any. but if someone else wanted to try it, caffeine free diet coke is easy to find. And perhaps doing an episode using all different kinds of Soda, but maybe trying different kinds of mentos too.

personally; I believe they should do a myth where a persons stomache would explode with too much stress put on the walls from foam created by the reaction of mentos and coke. I'm certain if a person ate a pack of mentos first, then quickly 'shotgunned' a coke, their somache would in fact; explode

I've been thinking. The reactive part of the Mentos is clearly the shell. If the shell were ground into a dust it would create more surface area for the Diet Coke to interact with. It would also be easier to deliver down the spout of the bottle. Speaking of the bottle, why didn't Jamie and Adam build custom rigs with nozzles and fill them with diet coke. I'm sure they could come up with an airtight chamber inside the bottle with a wire to pull to let the Mentos hit all at once. This has not been fully explored. Best show on television. You are the Kings of Reality TV.

heehee...this episode was sweet!!!!!!!And yes, i know it was a stupid idea, but i tried this at school with regular coca cola and the mint mentos. Nothing exploded, but me and my friend who bought the mentos felt like throwing up for the rest of the afternoon! But, why don't mentos explode great with normal coke, only diet?

ps: 1dont try eating them together unless you want to feel like throwing up, 2minty coca cola is awesomeSmile and 3try using fruity mentos, i heard they work pretty good 2, mythbusters:P

Mentos+Diet Coke is by far the worst thing that has ever happened to the MBs. No matter how many times they look at this myth people come on here and start blasting off that they did it wrong and 99% of them can't even explain why it's wrong. It was cool the first time they did it, when they tried to make the rockets and all that. But when they went for the bursting stomach, because... someone put it on youtube... people went off. "The guy in the video did it this way, you guys did it that way!" Blah blah.

Here are a few points all of you need to consider.

1. Have any of you tried to swallow a bunch of Mentos hole? It isn't very easy, besides by the time they reach your stomach, many of the microscopic holes that are absolutely crucial to the myth have been compromised by saliva and further diminished when they reach the stomach as the acid is already working its magic on that shell.
2. Much carbonation is lost when you swallow soda, not all of it of course, but a fair amount.
3. The guy in the video also posted a second video doing the exact same thing wearing a different shirt.... Yeah, he was seriously injured alright. Roll Eyes

In the episode in which Kari, Grant, and Tory visited the myth in which a man drunk diet coke and ate mentos and his stomach exploded.

The mythbusters added the coke first then dropped the mentos in, even though the video clearly shows the man eating the mentos first and then drinking the coke.

Would this have any affect on the BUSTED outcome of their tests.
