i think that there was a problem in the way this myth was tested, the brakes were not used after the shaft broke, if anyone was driving a car and the driveshaft broke the driver would hit the breaks fairly hard when this happened and there would be alot of weight shifted to the front, if the driveshaft hit a hole after the brakes were hit hard i think that you would have seen a different outcome in your test.

most every driveshaft is hollow and crumple under pressure, but this is a concern for NHRA who require driveshaft loops of race cars.

I myself stood my 1978 ford cyclone on its nose when the front ujoint broke it was not stock to say the least . I was street raceing going it 2nd with the power on full of coarse popped the clutch and snap put about a 3 inch hole in the ground and stood straight up paused and came down on what was left of the wheels rear was forced out frame was bent and had to make a fast trip to the washer to clean my clothing out . the diffrence of the power and manaul trans might be the diffrence it would be hard to simulate. NO drivesaft loop eather

Hello, I just joined recently and decided to tell a story I heard in high school. My mechanics teacher told me about a young man that he used to work with at a local shop. The man was changing a driveshaft on a customers vehicle, I believe a minivan, and went for lunch. When he returned, he forgot to tighten the front bolts. When the family was travelling down the highway later that day, the shaft dropped and launched the van in the air, and unfortunately killed the whole family. Now the mechanic that was wotking on the car had his licience revolked, and was never allowed to work on cars again. This man is still a close friend of my ex-teacher. This happened somewhere in Canada.

Usually it's not the drive shaft that breaks. It's the Universal Joint breaking through the flange bolts. I've seen a number of cars stranded with that type of damage.

I dsusaly dont POO POO these things but Most Minivans are front wheel drive and the only other Vans that use Front bolts on a drive shaft are maby a toyota , NOT Likely unless it was a full sized van with maby a steady berring ? The mith is true I race at my local drag track and we dont require drive shaft loops on cars slower than 10 second quarter mile , any how I have personaly seen 2 and heard of a few others Most dont flip but it has happened where the front bumper grabs and over it goes , Better have a good roll cage ,the thing is at at sat 500 RPM on the shaft it wants to stay streight and can dig in easily they need to cut one and place a bit of plasic or something in the cut and at about 80 pop it off , Might work ,
