Pain from eating hot peppers can be cured by petroleum jelly. Well, maybe not cured but prevented.
The petroleum jelly idea was misrepresented on the show.I believe the petroleum jelly or vaseline is supposed to be applied to your mouth before eating the chiles, thus preventing the Capsaicin from doing its job.I have won bets with this little tidbit of knowledge, and therefore know that it is effective. ( Betcha can’t eat one of these lantern peppers! ) I Scoff in your general direction.

Anyway, I am totally shocked that on the chili pepper myth that you did not use any cures that are proven to work. You only used the, no offense, 'fool' remedies. Take it from me, a person who has won a jalapeno eating contest at JalapenoFest in Laredo, TX and runnered up twice, that the surefire cures for spicy chili peppers are as follows: 1. Bread; it soaks up the oil instead of spreading it with liquid. 2. Corn chips; again, soaks up oil, not spread around. 3. Any kind of dry starch; again starches tend to absorb the oil rather than sperad it. Take it from me, a one time champ who downed 37 jalapenos in under 2 minutes, bread is the answer.
Well champ the record is 247 in 8 mins now, just a couple more than you eh?

I make some wicked salsa. My brother labeled it scalding. (I used Guamanian boonie peppers) I like to use Country Time lemonade as a cooler. You have to keep sipping it, but it really takes the burn off. I haven't found a way to take the next morning burn off yet. :-)

In the episode you said that milk was the 'best' cure, but if you have something heavier than milk that is still lactic it would work much better. Such as yogurt, sour cream or heavy cream.

hot water!!! u take a mouth-full, swish it around a little and it's gonna burn much, much worse than what it was before. then u either spit it out or swallow it, take a breath and it's completely gone.
i'm telling u, its the fastest way ever!!!
Yep! I was on Bali once and asked for some real authentic hot food since I was tired of the tourist food that was served everywhere. I got some noodles with an extra bowl of chili to it. I mixed some chili in the food and after a few seconds my face was red and my t-shirt was soaking wet. The waiter was prepared for the reaction and was standing behind me with a small cup of hot water. I sipped it a few times and presto - it was like re-formatting your taste buds. It was like the pain had never happend. Hot water is definitely the best cure, it can't get any better in my book. Cheers, Mathias

My partner and I just finished viewing the show. On how to stop the chili burn, and we both said you missed something that will stop the burning feeling in your mouth, and we agree with gnuu's post about this one...
Sugar, and anything sweet, like honey, soft or hard boiled lollies, ice cube on your tongue, will prevent the burning feeling... Kinda like the hot/cold, positive and negative theory will counter-react to defuse the sensation.

The best PREVENTION or cure is crackers, the crackers absorb the oil that causes the burning

As a Texan who has eaten far too much spicy food, I have to say that nothing has cured a "hot mouth" more than coffee. It sounds disgusting, and sometimes it is, but it has worked every time. I have a coworker that brings in homemade pico de gallo and I'm thankful for the coffee pot in the office because she's a sadistic Panamanian and coffee is the only thing that has kept me from crying in front of her.

I am of mexican-american descent and I've KNOWN hot food since my babyhood (if I do say so myself). I think you all went about trying to find a 'cure' for the dreaded chili burn in entirely the wrong way, because it's not just beer (that's the cure) that will cure you, it's also what you do with it. You have to swish it around in your mouth for awhile in order to get the burn out, kinda like mouth wash, but simply drinking it alone wont work to counteract the burn. I think soda pop will do the same thing, but more slowly. Hard to remember when the last time I had soda when I could have had a beer was, but that's what I recall.

as for the fish in the barrel you will hit more fish if you aim below the reflection of the fish like when you spear hunt fish. The image you see on the surrface of the water is a refelction so if you aim just below you should hit target dead on.

A spoonful of ketchup, held in your mouth for a minute or so, is the best thing I have found!

My hot chili cure would be vegetable oil. I think the oil would absorb the capsaicin just like the milk.
