A vortex behind the train isn't a cause fo suction. When a train passes at a high speed, the airflow close to the train also passes at high speed. High speed flow means low pressure. This is based on Bernoulli theory which is same theory used for airplane to fly. That low pressure sucks a person. If a train is long enough, a person will hit a train and get injured or in the worst case die.

So what you are saying is the train went too fast on the test for any result? And you want the train just go on the average train speed or just slow down?

The speed of the train was fine. The problem was the length of the train. Becasue in front of the train, there is a very high pressure region which pushes away from the train. That is the reason why the baby stroller was blown. After that high pressure region is passed which probably takes three or four car length, then the suction begins. So the train needs to be at least ten cars or so. not two like in the show. I think it is difficult to test with the actual train since it has very heigh possiblity of damaging the train.

They should revisit this one with a faster train, like French TGV or Next Gen AGV or GErman ICE speeding around 200 mph.. It couldbe interesting, and I would be able to see them

I watched the episode just now in finland. It came from discovery channel, and i must say that for my opinion busting the myth was wrong. I have experienced once a camera tripoid to fall down even i was filming the train about 8 meters from nearest rail, wich is in here finland "safest" distance. Train was pullet two locomotives and containet 30 russian opentop logwagons with high ends. Secondly the train in the episode was too short. It shuld be made with empty opentop car s rather than passenger train.

I just had a thought, what about an underground train? In the London underground when a train approaches, you could feel the wind as the train closes in to the station from the tunnel. This is a welcome breath of air on summer days (Since our dodgy underground doesnt have AC and relies on the the movement of trains to provide ventilation!)
What if the train goes full blast past the underground station and doesnt stop? Wont it create a suction as it passes the platform from the other tunnel behind the train?

About two months ago, a stroller was pulled against a train and then tossed back quite far when the train had hit it. It was caused by a freight train, the speed limit at this station is 100kph. Fortunately, the father took the baby out of the stroller about a minute before that incident had happened. The stroller was standing in the middle of the platform (way behind the white line) but the father forgot to apply the brakes of the stroller. It didn't trip over, it rolled against the train. Here's the news report: http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/content/Kinderwagen_von_...rissen/536840/534206Click on "Zur ZDFmediathek" and then set your favourite player and internet speed to access the video. At the end of the report you see a short clip of an experiment done by the police years ago.
