The build team go to the ranch to drag Tory's a..er... jeans around (with him in them!) to see if the friction from dragging will actually set them on fire!

I was wondering if the water used in the shrinking pants experiment was kept warm. I know if I was sitting in a tub for hours I would periodically reheat it. Would the water temperature have an effect on the constriction?

OK, so maybe the myth is about being dragged behind a horse, and your pants catch on fire, but clearly, the fabric wears through faster than it builds up heat when the surface is too abrasive. Don't you ever remember sliding across a hard floor on your knees as a kid? Gets pretty hot. Perhaps they could give it another go on a surface that isn't so abrasive.

What if the pants had metal buttons or studs that were scraped against something on the ground that could create a spark. Let just say the man being drug was working on a car or some farm equipment, got oil or gas or some other flamable liquid soaked in the pants. Could the pants catch fire then?

My friend is a plumber and he told me about a water heater exploding and taking off like a rocket so i definitely think it's plausable. He told me this about a year ago. I didn't see this episode yet but I'll try to catch it on Easter morning at 11 AM.

I liked the belt sander idea but you should try a belt made of the same material as the pants. This should allow you the most friction without having a n abrasive destroying the material.
Good luck guys!

As for the pants catching on fire by friction with the ground. This would never work. Even if the pants would reach the right temperature to ignite, they would not continue to burn, the embers would be whisked away by the passing ground, and really if you think about it what do they teach you in the first grade when you catch on fire? STOP DROP and ROLL, I just figure that this is just a higher speed version of the the method they teach through out grade school.
