Jamie's rig was just cool. I had no idea if it would work.

I wonder if there's a way to punch through the concrete and activate some sort of anchor like a wall anchor for Adam's rig. I know it wouldn't be easy though, plus in the Batman cartoon, the concrete thingy doesn't penetrate...

FYI, Popular Science awarded a 2007 invention award to the "Flying Belt" which can lift a man 10 feet per second and weighs 20 lbs.

Nice job to the Myth busters!

I hate when the Mythbusters say that they can't do certain things because their "insurance" won't allow them to. But then you go and see them pull some stunts like Jamie did in the utility belt grappling hook. When he got to the end of the line (27 feet in the air) and realized he had no reverse, he cut the line with a knife. First off, I knew he would get hit in the nose when he cut the line, but I thought for sure he would cut through his safety line as well (about 6 inches from doing it), and fall the 27 feet. Could have been worse.

if grant had a smaller nitro blaster (used on car) and Adam took that and had a grappling tip attached that went in straight and then sprung out on the other side or just expanded a bit inside the concrete, it could work the grapple point wood have to be diamond tipped though.

In response to sticking a nail in to concrete and it holding your weight, maybe the right kind of nail needs to be used. There is a housing company that creates hurricane proof houses, one of the things that help keep these houses together are nails with ridges so when they go in they do not come out. If Adam or Jamie could build something to make that nail stick, i do not see it coming out for a person since it is designed to stick during a hurricane. Just a though, Jamie said he would not mind trying it again, I hope to see a recap that goes a little more in depth about it.

I hope adam and jamie read this. It is about the gun adam made, I think they should modify a single shot hunting pistol to launch the grappling hook through the concrete.

I found Adam and Jamie's attempt at this entertaining, but the fact that they would bust this myth on their timeline and budget is both arrogant and ludicrous. Remember that Batman's alter ego was the billionaire Bruce Wayne, which is how all of his equipment was financed. Do you not think that a billion dollars couldn't be put into research to find something exponentially better than what Adam built in one day from junk parts?!

Nice gadget!
I thought Jamie had at first injured himself with those shears. At least he had protective lenses when that cable snapped.

What did Adam use to shoot the nail into the concrete? Something about a .22?

there is. when you mountain climb theres somthing called a Spring Loaded Camming Device. they put it in the rocks and it opens up. heres a pic of one http://leisurequest.net/shop/images/thumbnails/t_298.jpg. and if they could get that to be sharper it would probbaly work. hope they read this.

and to add to what i wrote ive used those nails before while building houses. and tehy arent used to hold wait. infact they are used to hold chicken wire like stuff to a concrete walls so you can stucco it.

So you want to blame Adam and Jamie for the ridiculous and often arbitrary decisions made by an insurance company? Big Grin

Jamie's accention rig worked fine but Adam's grappling gun didn't. I think he should try different rigs than just the one he built. I mean you can't just go with the first result you get.

Jamie, well I knew he was gonna have the better rig Razz and that adam might have overlooked something. You could have like a banana-peel type thing in the nail so that when it penetrates the concrete, you press a button that sends an electric current that would anchor the nail in the wall.

Oh and by the way adam, get a stronger rope Razz

But anyways great job!

Something like this:
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Prod...&productId=100091715
From my understanding, it works basically like a nail gun that propels the nail by firing a .22 cal. blank cartridge.

I really would like to get my hands on a schematic of Jamie's climbing rig. I've thought several times about trying to find a small winch and rig up something like this.

Threee years ago I built three versions Battery, weedeater motor and air powered) of a rope climber for the US Special Forces and appreciate the great job they did in such a short time inspite of forgetting about the getting down part. I have a mock-up of a concrete nail imbedding grappling hook hanging in my shop along side the GI Joe with a working rope climber model. I also did the submerged car thing in the 70's for DOT with the same results and conclusions.
