I actually live in Maine, so it doesn't even need to be too hot for this to happen.
I decided that I was drinking too much soda, so I stopped about a week ago Thursday. I had a can of Cherry Coke sitting in my cupholder, so I just left it there to work on my willpower. Yesterday (Tuesday) was about an 85-degree day. I drove to get lunch at noon, and then parked my car back in the parking lot. When I left work at 5:00, the can had exploded at the seam of the top and the cylinder part of the can. Not the entire can had spilled out, so luckily it was mostly just in the cupholders.

I lived in Phoenix for a very long time, it was known by most people not to leave soda in your car for that reason. I have had sodas explode, video tapes melt, and also cassette tapes and CDs warp. you need to leave the item unattended( meaning no opening doors, or windows )and it will definitely explode.

It may be a boring myth to revisit but I think it needs to be done. Maybe they should take a short trip from San Francisco to somewhere in the central valley where its hotter. When I lived in Fresno, CA I left a diet coke in my car when I went to work. At 5:00 not only had the soda exploded leaving nothing in the can, everything had dried completely.

Well lets just say the car isnt the only place soda cans can explode. After I finnished cooking dinner tonight we heard a poping noise coming from the kitchen. I went in to see what it was and on top of the stove was a 6 pack of soda that exploded from the heat of the oven!!! I didnt even notice the soda when I was heating our dinner up in the oven.

Good Day Mythbuster Friends....
Exploding soda cans occur regularly here in the dead heat of Phoenix. I have the stain on the roof of my car for proof. Although I'm quite positive the temperature in my car did not reach a scolding 300... I do know that it does reach temperatures that can melt many interior components of the vehicle, or even kill a person in a few hours. Here in AZ, there are news reports (sadly) that seem to be a regular problem where people leave anything from kids/pets/grandparents/ and yes, sodas in the car, and to my research, all 4 selections will perish (at least in this heat) if given enough patience.
