I think adam and jamie may be messing this one up. I'm watching right now, so I wouldn't know for sure if they fix it, but it's not really right so far. The way I've understood the saying, they mean shooting dead fish packed in a barrel, like you might find at a market. My mom thinks they would be living, but still packed in a barrel. Either way, it's a lot more simple than shooting a solitary (or a few small) fish swimming in a barrel. That's just my thoughts, but we'll see.

Ditto. Shooting fish in a barrel means shooting into a barrel full of fish. Have either of them ever seen a Western? *sigh* I had more faith in Jamie, at least...

But it's camera fun and corpseotronic, so more power to them.

I think they are [B]over thinking and taking the phrase out of context. It actually means shooting fish in a barrel. like throwing them in a barrel. I guess it came from the frontiers mens' families who were apperently very bored( and lived near a pond or lake). you kno things like xbox and playstation wern't invented yet SmileThats what i think

I bet in the saying they were not talking about shooting with a gun, but shooting with a bow and arrow. Indians shot fish with bow and arrow in a stream. Putting the fish in a barrel was easy.

Why else would you shoot fish anyway?

I was thinking the same thing.. There is no mention of water in the saying.. It's not "As easy as shooting fish in a barrel of water."

I don't know what you guys were thinking with this one, but you messed it up. Fish in a barrel are packed in tightly and usually cured in some fashion, like with salt. No one in their right mind would attempt to keep a single fish in a barrel. I appreciate the fun in shooting into a barrel of water, but if you are going to test a myth have at least some idea of what the myth is about.

You guys are right. Fish in a barrel has nothing to do with water. I picture a 55 gallon drum full of fish.

yeah I've watched them go through several myths like this and just wondered what they were thinking. After a while it does become obvious that they can't think of everything in myths and that they don't neccesarily know what they're doing. I guess that's why they come to the fans. I just wish they could figure out the easy ones without having to test. (ie. "will your tongue stick to a frozen pole?" they clearly have never lived up north. I know people who've done that)

We have seen that by shooting with a gun it will kill a fish because of the shockwave in the water, even if the bullet misses the fish completely. However, what i would like to see is them attempting to use a crossbow to see if they could more accuratly hit the fish. Or possibly try shooting while the gun is in the water, to avoid the bullet dissintegrating or veering off course from the impact of the surface of the water.

Is "shooting fish in a barrel" as easy as "clubbing baby seals"? I'd love to see 'em test that myth! Big Grin

WHAT THE HELL?

Sorry if I'm a bit late, but I just fired up my DVR and found this new episode freshly recorded.

It's only about 3 minutes into the show and I'm already shocked and disgusted.

THEY CAN'T USE LIVE FISH? How on Earth have we gotten to the point where we can't shoot at FISH? These aren't PEOPLE. These aren't KITTENS. These aren't even MAMMALS. They're FISH. Get a little perspective and grow up already.

I guess I'm not the only one who kept thinking USE A LIVE FISH!, but oh well, damned PETA...

As for the gatling gun, why wouldnt he let Adam shoot? I'd be like "MY TURN, MY TURN!"

So, they cant shoot a live fish, but they can risk a mouse being trampled by an elephant?

Who cares?

PETA are not a legal, government, regulatory, or even moral authority. They are a terrorist organization. They do NOT have the right to run our lives.

I agree that Adam should have had a turn at the gun. I was amazed that he let Jamie have all the fun.

On the show, they said Jamie only hit 3 fish out of thirty for a 10% average, but if he only had 9 pellets in the shotgun shell, that would be 3 out of 9, or 33%, right?
