This episode created a second Myth.
"That any sort of bed cover was in effective because all the air will take an aerodynamic shape as long as the tail gate is up".
It has actually hurt a guy who is making a Aerodynamic fast back shell that he has wind tunnel tested and shows a significant improvement in MPG over tail gate up and conventional camper shells.
Site where the guy is a member.

Where the myths are that specifically mention the episode as why this guys product does not work.

What about camper shells? Do they improve gas mileage or reduce it? I am convinced it doesn't help or hurt but my husband thinks it helps...any ideas?

I just caught the pick-up tailgate MPG episode. You did this with a newer model of truck. The newer models were designed to reduce drag with the bed to be closed. The new standard truck beds are only 6.5' long, that TOTALLY affects drag.

Thats why the original myth of increased mileage does in fact work. Please somebody- tell these guys to do it again with 1979 Ford F150 with a full 8' bed!!!! the data will be different, I promise.

I understand the behind-the-cab-air-vortex thing, but it affects older trucks quite differently since they are shaped differently. I'm totally disappointed that this fact of general shape and design was completely ignored in this episode!!!!!! NOT SO for those of us who still drive classic steel. You gotta do this again with some classic 1970's or early 80's pickup longbeds!!! thanx

What happens if there is a fourwheeler on the back of the truck?

This is a myth from the 70's/80's the average truck from that time frame was a single cab 8foot bed truck not the 4dr short bed fords that were tested. I'm willing to bet that if they revisit this one with long bed trucks the outcome would be much different.

It might be a good follow-up to look at the effect of a tonneau cover on fuel efficiency.

i have the same question. if you have a hard shell over the bed of the truck, does it effect the gas mileage. that should be a added show
