First off, I agree with everyone who thinks that the startled elephant could be with sound waves or unnatural color. The main thing I'm concerned about is that is the elephant really a kind, smart creature. What I mean by that is are they trying not to hurt the mice? Try a salamander or a snake. Also, try something not living like a romate control. Spicy pepper, try buttered bread and milk! It always works!!!!!!
P.S. What is Adam's or Jamie's email address? They talk about it on the show but I don't know what it is!!

Most fun about getting to shoot fish in a barrel is using a proper gun to do it...Great Job Jamie!
But I would like to say that the BEST remedy for heat reduction when it comes to hot peppers is granulated sugar- Take 1 sugar packet(real sugar- no subs), dump in mouth and roll around and swallow.... Helps every time.... Something for the next episode revisiting topics.

To what end? The myth is not "Elephants are only afraid of mice", but Elephants are afraid of mice" That said, the answer is apparently, "Yes". For some reason, Elephants are wary of small, scurrying creatures, mice included.

And yet again I ask, "To what end?" The myth is not, "Elephants are afraid of mice they can't see", but "Elephants are afraid of mice." If they are afraid of a mouse - any mouse; no matter its color - then the myth is substantiated. The fact there may be mice out there of which an Elephant is not afraid in no way negates the fact there are mice of which the Elephant is afraid.

Yes, but if elephants are afraid of everything then who cares if they're afraid of mice or not? I agree that they should redo it.

Orange slices work the best for cooling of a hot mouth. Try this one when you revisit the myth later.

So, I have considerable experience eating very spicy food. My favorite dish has 10 thai hot red peppers minced into the sauce, and my friend grows his own peppers for it because they're hotter than purchased peppers. When my friend makes that dish for me, after eating I have to wash my hands immediately to make sure I don't accidentally get any pepper oils in or on any sensitive body parts.
Milk isn't bad as "cures" go. They could have immediately gotten a much better result using ice cream.
However, the real best things for stopping that chilli pepper burn are (your choice) bread or plain (cooked) rice, and I'm surprised the show didn't test these. While a fatty liquid like milk helps to wash away some of the spicy oils, bread or rice will soak the spicy oils right up. Three or four bites of bread or spoonfuls of rice will usually completely eliminate the pain from the peppers if you simply make sure to rub the bread or rice around your tongue before swallowing.
If the pain relief scale assumes that milk is a 5 and goes from 1 to 10, I'd say ice cream is probably about a 7.5, and bread and rice are probably both a 10.

Great work with the elephant/mice myth. The only thing that would have made it better is testing multiple elephants with multiple mice.

The fish in a barrel episode with the gatling gun just continues a disturbing trend on MB of doing whatever is necessary to work guns and violence into every episode. Are the Mythbusters actually Marine Flunk-Outs who have to be around guns constantly ?

Or crackers. Crackers are dry, and they absorb the spicy oil that is in the pepper that Tory and Grant swished around. Water would not work because it just mixes around the oils. My dad tried using the water but that only made the pain worse.

I think the experiment should be repeated. The odd color of the mouse used in the experiment, white, probably helped startle the elephant more than the fact it was looking down on a mouse. The experiment should be repeated with a gray mouse and then a white moving object the size of a mouse.

To test this theory, you'd need to suddenly unleash a different animal. A turtle, perhaps, or a guinea pig. Something that's too big to pose an intra-trunk threat.
Sorry Discovery Channel, you'll have to foot the bill for another trip to Africa.
I heard the same thing from a Zoo Keeper , its not just mice but any small creature of that size, anything that could get in their trunk...OR they are a compassionate animal and realize that they could kill the mouse if they stepped on it. Researchers have often claimed that Elephants CAN show the same sort of Sentiant behavior as Dolphins.

re: Elephant vs Mouse What if the elephant is so conscientious that it does not want to hurt other creatures with it's heavy foot, knowing how big they are. Since elephants cannot jump, it would have to totally mash whatever it steps on while it shifts its weight to another foot. How bad would you feel?

Elepants ARE color blind!!! they should redo the myth and see if even a white rag would have the same effect that the mouse had. i agree that they need to not use a white mouse also.

Just curious if anyone else noticed that the second time the mouse was used and the elephant jumped back, it looked like its trunk touched the string line just prior to it jumping back. My suspicion is that it was startled by the line, not the mouse, and that is what made it react and move off.

We were thinking that maybe the elephant is just afraid of small rodents all together, learned to be cautious of snakes or scorpions, or the high pitched squeak. If you do this again, maybe try a variety of small rodents and see if you get the same reaction.

I wanna to see the MB try other cures for the hot chilli peppers, what about ice cream, sugar, bread, other liquids, gatarade, etc. I would really like to see those tested and ranked. Thanks
