for hot food i found rice to work, the more gluton in it the better and peanutbuter also works. As for the mice what about oher small mamals like rats it may be because they know mice spread desiese so they may have the same fear of a rat?

They figured that shooting anywere in the water would kill the fish because of a shockwave.... wouldnt this also happen in the myth were they said it was safe to escape a bullet while underwater??

@ Maxsim: No, not really. Fish are much smaller, first of all, so a shockwave that we wouldn't even feel would be significant to them. Plus, they have really sensitive organs that help them stay upright in the water. Big boom=those sensitive organs are wrecked, and they die of shock/whatever.
Of course, a human would die if you shot at him with a 16" from an Iowa class battleship, but I don't think a shockwave would be the most worrysome thing to the person...

For the elephants myth, I don't think mythbusters actually understood how smart these elephants are. For example: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/comedy-goldmine/tales-from-zoo-4.php?page=5
So there's the possibility of the elephants not wanting to step on and kill the mouse, and not being scared of it. So could they try some rabbits, or some bigger/other animals?
Or the white color of the mouse might startle it. They need to try some field mice. The Mythbusters really bungled this one up.

Very interesting myth, and I was shocked by the result!!!

I am not 100% convinced though that the Elephants are afraid of mice. There needs to be more tests done and I REALLY hope they re-visit this one.

Other tests:

- Brown Mice
- Cotton ball
- Small Remote control car
- Lizard or snake or frog or some other small animal

It's possible that the Elephant will not be afraid of the brown mouse but will be afraid of the cotton ball which will lead me to believe that it was the bright white colouring that startled the elephant. Remote control car would prove whether it is the sharp movements that scared it, and the small animals would prove whether they are afraid of mice or just small animals in general.

I also agree with others that the elephants may just not want to hurt the mice, so it will be interesting to see how they react with other creatures.

I think you've made an interpretation error on this one - depending on your definition of the word 'afraid'.

Elephants are NOT afraid of mice. What is happening here is that they are avoiding stepping on the mouse. Elephants REALLY HATE stepping on things that go squish. Perhaps this is remorse over killing or just dislike of the icky feeling.

Elephants are often seen with a 'brave' man lying under their feet about to be crushed. Actually the elephants dislike of squishing things means the man is taking virtually no risk whatsoever.

On your show you attributed the elephant's movement away from the mouse as fear. Actually, IMHO, they were just avoiding squishing the mouse.

FYI: I lived in Thailand for over 4 years and had an acquantance who was a mahoot. I regularly bought him a beer when he stopped at my local pub to rest his elephant and this was one 'myth' we did discuss.

A few years ago I actually participated in an university lecture where the lecturer told, that elephants are not afraid of mice, but stepping on mice, as they appreciate life. Supposedly this is also the reason why many kind of animals are moving around with elephants, because they know that elephants will not tolerate killing from lions etc.

As far as the methods to cut the burn from eating chile(s), I have to agree with several posts I've seen here. From personal experience, I've found that starch (in my experience, rice - I live in Korea and have spent time in Thailand; many local dishes from both countries are quite fiery), and something sweet (IME, sweet tea or honey - I learned this from visiting New Mexico, where many restaurants have squeeze bottles of honey and/or serve sweetened ice tea) have been most efficacious in cutting the burn from hot peppers.

I read somewhere (Yes, i'm a bookworm.) that elephants are NOT afraid of mice. and why should they? They weigh about a ton or more and the mouse weighs about 2ounces or so!

The best cure for hot chili-pepper is milk.

If I guess how many fish are in this barrel do I get a prize?

I think the elephant was startled because the mouse they used was a white mouse. If they used a brown mouse it might now startle it as much because it blends with the ground
