I was watching an episode of Monk where they tried shooting a steel lock with no prevail but then they sawed through it with a diamond bracelet. Would the diamond or the bracelet itself be able to stand up long enough to saw through the locking ring (?) of a steel lock.

Yes, I remember. I also remember disassembling one of those locks, only to discover that the place where the bullet pierces the lock doesn't contain any parts of the lock mechanism. So the commercial doesn't really prove anything.

The laminated design was a major advance over the state of the art of 1920s padlock technology. I can imagine that the cost of producing a lock from stamped sheet metal is also advantageous.

As for the "Monk" episode, polished gemstone diamonds would be useless as an impromptu saw. And the jewelry bracelet would be the weak links in the chain. That story line is bogus.

I feel that the most vulnerable part of the lock is where the key goes in. If you destroy that part, the lock should open. That or try shooring the part that goes through whatever you're locking shut, I forget what it's called.

They do need to revisit the myth, they shot the locks in such a way that it was nearly impossible to succeed.

To remove the padlock:- they should shoot down onto the top of the lock between the arms of the shackle. A blow there with a hammer will remove most shackle locks. Shooting into the body of the lock as they did simply bends the lock, the only thing that they would damage would be the tumblers.

To open a door with a bullet:- do not shoot into the lock itself, shoot into the junction of the door and the door frame at an angle of about 45 degrees aiming at the point where the bolt of the lock goes into the frame. Shooting into the lock where they were shooting simply jams the lock and leaves the bolt in place, still locking the door.

In the show they came up with the fact that if the gun is powerful enough you can shoot a lock open at close range but that it is very dangerous. But what if you were further back a safe distance, would it work?

Hey, what if you shot a tumbler lock, like on a safe? I don't remember them trying a lock like that.
