The pit bull situation that was on earlier really disturbed me. The guy had 80 pit bulls and he only gave 30 to animal control. That means he is left with 50 pit bulls! Absolutely insane! I have 2 pit bulls and these dogs require attention and excercise on a daily basis. I don't understand why he got to keep the 50 when they were severely neglected in kennels all day. In my town there is a law that you cannot have more than 4 dogs total. I really hope that they can get these poor dogs out of his household and into a loving home where they can be spayed and neutered! There is such an overpopulation of pit bulls right now and these kind of people are ruining it for all of us responsible pit owners. It is obvious he is pretty much running a puppy mill and I would love to see all his dogs out of his care.

brand,

the original count was 60, not 80, and one of the EAMTs said to the camera that unfortunately, the dogs were being maintained properly accding to state animal welfare laws, which are minimalist in most of the states where they exist at all.

Here's Jim Boller addressing equivalent issues in Texas when he was with the Houston SPCA:

The biggest challenge I find with cruelty investigations is remaining objective. Many of the people that we deal with are naïve about proper animal care and it is challenging to educate them as to what is reasonable under the law in Texas. It also can be challenging dealing with those reporting alleged cases of animal cruelty, because sometimes they do not understand why we can't change a situation. For example, there are many times we might find that the animal is not being properly cared for, but the state standard is being met; therefore, legally, no change can be required. Animal related issues are very emotional ones. In order to be effective at what we do we must look at the situation based on what the law allows versus what our personal opinion is.

It's fortunate that at least 30 of the dogs could be negotiated with the owner for removal.
