I agree. Why isn't there animal cops in Chicago. What can we do to get this going? I have a degree in Criminal Justice Management and I would love to become an animal cop. Chicago needs to get on the ball. More and more animals are being abused daily and something needs to be done about it. I want to do something about it!!

See the Chicago Animal Care and Control web page at http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalEnti...ntityNameEnumValue=2 - they have animal control (i.e., animal cops) functions

Also see the Animal Welfare League web page at http://www.animalwelfareleague.com/programs/index.asp - they do cruelty investigations work.

there is a distinction, blurred in some of the AP animal cops series, that is important to keep in mind. Animal cops are usually government employees responsible for collecting strays etc., and while they sometimes get involved in cruelty cases, that is not their main thrust.

animal cruelty investigation is normally done by private humane organizations, which do not do "cop" work but often coordinate with local law to bring cases to fruition. they will of course collect some strays that are in physical danger and/or are abandoned in yards, etc.

the ASPCA does both - its HLE Division has full law enforcement powers and does largely cruelty investigation. NYC's Animal Care and Control has the City's stray collection job.

In Houston, the SPCA's investigations function is a cruelty operation only, with collaborative links with local law enforcement to get warrants for seizing cruelty case animals, to bring cruelty cases to criminal courts, etc.

etc. etc. etc. it all varies from city to city, and is all dependent on cooperative arrangements with related organizations.
