How many other people got a huge wake up call from this show? I started watching it, and within a week, I'm adopting a dog from our local humane society. Now my husband and I are discussing going to school to become vet's. And it just feels right too, being a vet. I don't know why I didn't think about it before, but does anyone else feel that way?
Good for you, gator4life! Hopefully shows of this nature will inspire others to adopt animals rather than buying from a pet store or breeder. Thanks for sharing with us.
Five years ago in Febuary, I adopted my dog Rossco from the local spca. Only after the adoption did I learn he had been at the shelter for more than eight months.
That bothered me for awhile. I kept wondering how such a nice dog had to languish in the shelter for so long. I then decided to volunteer at the shelter to help other dogs find their forever homes.
Now five years later I am still going strong on the volunteering. I take pictures of the dogs that are posted on the spca Website http://www.spcacincinnati.org/adopt/default2.asp?active_page_id=57 I create flyers from the pictures that other volunteers print ou and post wherever possible. I help at the various spca events during the year.
I also am very active with Sheltered Paws Dog Rescue www.shelteredpaws.com The group works strictly with dogs at the shelter. Since I can't foster (already have too many animals in the house) I help at what I do best. I do all the group's pr stuff; business cards, brochures, flyers, announcements etc. I manage the group's PetFinder site and I created the group Website.
All of this activity is the direct result of the adoption of one dog. I know Rossco isn't aware of what an influence he has been but I do everyday.
I jokingly say that I work to support my volunteer habit.
