It's soo hot their and I can't understand why they don't wear shorts. The Policemen and Firefighters even get to wear shorts in Phoenix. They could keep a pair of long pants in their truck if they had to protect their legs against something.
Interesting theory. How many firefighters do you know willing to wear shorts when they are fighting a fire? The answer would be none.
Also, not all police officers wear shorts in summertime weather. Motorcycle officers are a perfect example of this. Also, patrol officers don''t wear shorts during the summer months. Bike patrol officers are allowed and wear them though. You will also not find too many officers from the mounted unit wearing shorts either when they are on duty. It has a lot to do with professionalism as well.
There is a reason why the EAMTs wear long pants. You can carry a lot more gear in those cargo pants than with shorts. They also have a little bit more protection on the legs wearing longer pants. Your reasoning for allowing them to wear shorts and then keep a long pair of pants in the trucks also doesn't work.
When they are on a critical rescue they are not going to take extra time putting on a long pair of pants and make the animal wait. When helping animals in distress, every second counts. Also, by wearing longer pants they do have a bit more protection especially when they have to crawl into tight spaces, underneath objects or over them. If you were an EAMT and had to go on those rescues, you'd be very glad you wore those cargo pants.
Wendy, I was thinking that too, It's so hot their in the summer. It's ridiclous for the EAMT's to be wearing long pants in that heat! They should be able to wear cargo shorts they got a lot of pockets too. plus you don't want them to get a heat stroke. I assume it's a rule in PHX that EAMT's can't wear shorts and must wear the long dark cargo pants.
You are not going to get heat stroke from wearing long pants. I live in Arizona and know how hot the summers get here and I wear jeans quite often when I am on the job.
The long cargo pants protect the legs, especially when having to do rescues through crawl spaces and all the other nasty stuff you have to move through. You also have a little more protection from the sun when you are covered up. Also, the EAMTs also have to enter situations where there are hoarding cases. Many of these places are wall to wall animal urine and feces. Would you really want to walk through all that in shorts? I don't think you would because that is pretty much a biohazard situation.
I think there was also an episode where and EAMT had to enter a sewer to rescue a kitten. With all that nasty water and waste any ordinary person would be glad they were wearing longer pants.
This show isn't the Crocodile Hunter where wearing kaki shorts is the ok thing to do. These men and women are professionals. They are not postal workers, athletes or some person driving a UPS truck where the company allows them to wear shorts in the summer.
During the summer you drink plenty of water and so do the EAMTs, police officers, firefighters, and anyone else who works outside. It may be hot but when you are used to it it doesn't phase you much unless you are stupid enough to not stay hydrated.
