I was wondering if anyone knew what you needed to do to become an animal cop. I live in Austin, TX and was curious what skills were necessary and where you discovered postings for these opportunities. I would appreciate any and all help anyone can provide. Thank you very much!!
I have many years in this work and can tell you that the best way to start in any type of animal field work is simply to get a job starting as kennels or any part of an animal shelter, even as a volunteer if they are not hiring. Just make sure that the shelter has a field department (if that’s your goal) and be the best hard working employee you can, when there is an opening in that department you will be noticed. Take any training offered to all staff and even inquire with the Field Manager/Supervisor that you’re interested in the department, go for ride-a long’s if they allow it. Most Humane Society's don't require criminal law degree's but do want people with professional animal handling skills, going to school and learning as much as you can about criminal law and taking vet technician classes will be very helpful. Now days most government agency’s only accept applications online. If you are called for an interview make sure you know the shelters mission, vision and history, do your home work on the place of employment so you know more about them and what they are looking for. The more experience you have working with animals directly in shelter environments the better. Please keep in mind that there are some very sad situations and frustrations dealing with ignorant people and you must keep your calm and be professional, there are a lot of people who want to do this work but it’s not for everyone. This can be very rewarding and I am glad to have work in this type of work even when it’s at its worst. Good luck and remember you are already helping the animals by supporting your local animal shelter.
