In case you'all weren't aware, there's a hot new aftercare product for tattoos.

It's emu oil.

I know it sounds weird, but emu oil is actually the best stuff I've seen for healing tattoos. And as a shop owner/tattoo artist, I've seen quite a few techniques including:

1). Petroleum jelly products such as Vaseline or Bacitracin (absolute no-no!)
2). Neosporin creme for two days, then non-scented body lotion (ie. Lubriderm) a couple times a day until healed.
3). Very light coat of "Aquaflor" a couple times a day until healed.
4). Just non-scented body lotion from the get go
5). Tattoo Goo, or similar herbal product (works okay)
6). Near-scalding hot compress immediately after getting the tattoo (Japanese aftercare method)

I've seen much better results with emu oil than I've seen with any of the above methods.

I just recently got an aftercare kit ( soap, healing salve & lotion ) from Black Cat Tattoo Aftercare and in the 20+ years I have been working on my Tattoo's, this stuff is awesome!!! But let me add that I was in Vegas in May for the APP convention, got turned on to Emu Oil, and I will be the 1st one to admit, the stuff is incredible!!!! What I tell all my clients about aftercare is there are MANY aftercare methods, but I think alot of it is dependant on the person themselves, because something that works great for one, might not work for another. Research your choices, and apply whats best for you. But remember, AFTERCARE is a MUST! And so far, that advice hasn't done me wrong. Big Grin

Lavender oil also helps with the healing process. It also works on burns - sunburns, windburns, and even if you steam cook your arm because of being clumsy Big Grin

I've heard some of the bikers at the HD shop MaMa works at swear by emu oil. MaMa had some of them try lavendar oil just because of the healing properties and so far nobody has complained. Some of them now swear by lavendar oil.

If you are going to use any oil like lavendar or emu, you'll want to do a patch test on the skin someplace. Put on a small amount and wait 15 minutes for a reaction. If there's no reaction you are good to go.

Thanks for the website and thanks for the info on the Lavender oil as well. My Tattoo is behind my neck it's about 8 days old now. Part of it peeled and some parts now have very some thick scabs on it. Is it too late to start putting Emu oil on it? Or is Emu Oil something you can continue to put on even after the healing process? Right now I have putting Lubirderm on it. Let me know. I'm a bit worried about the scabbing. Some websites suggest not putting ANYTHING on it at all to let the scab dry up and fall off on it's own.

THANKS AGAIN

Got my Black Cat stuff yesterday...

Sure does smell a lot like Tattoo Goo.

Was looking at the stuff inside of Tattoo Goo, Ink Fixx and the Black Cat all seem to be closelly related. (is closelly a word)..

Any way almost a week out on my birthday tat.
It is really healing nicely anyway...

Pops52..

I bought the Ink Fixx stuff at the Mimai Ink shop right after my Tattoo was done. I put it on the next day and it burned like hell. So I had to buy A&D and use that instead. Now that it's dried up a bit I can use the Ink Fixx and it does not burn. Still wanna try this Emu Oil stuff. Part of my Tattoo peeled and that's all gone but parts scabbed and I still have the scabs of course. PRAYING that my Tattoo will look nice after scabs fall off. Roll Eyes

Just got my Emu Oil yesterday. I got these little red bumps around my tattoo. From what I have been reading...it's a reaction to the Lubiderm...from putting too much on the tattoo itself and around outside of the Tattoo. I washed it and let it dry and seems to be a bit better. I will try the Emu Oil and hope there is no reaction to it. I will will have to remember to just just a tiny bit on the Tattoo itself and not smear it all around my skin outside of my Tattoo.
