My name is Tracy 8 years ago I brought this little fuzzball choco lab mix pup home. She became like a child to me. We did everything together. I had to take her to the hospital Monday, Jan 28th and she was diagnosed with diabetis. So while I was waiting for her to come home, I baked her diabetic cookies and bought her new treats that were suitable for diabetic dogs. The Tuesday I got a phone call from the animal hospital telling me to come say goodbye, she had gotten a high fever and her kidneys were shuting down. She died Wednesday morning and I feel like I have lost my best friend and part of my family. The loss is so devistating to me all I do is cry. I don't know what to do now, I feel like someone ripped my heart out. My little girls name was Ruger and I miss her so much

I am so sorry for your loss. I understand getting that phone call. At least you got to say goodbye. Many people do not get to. I just posted my story about my rabbits. But the second one I got, Mr. Bebels, he died at the hospital a couple hours after I brought him there and I didn't get to say goodbye. Although I only had him for 4 days I was very attached to him because I got gotten him a couple weeks after I had to put my first rabbit to sleep. He eased the pain a little for me and then just like that he was gone too. It is one of the hardest things in life to deal with. Because the emotional connection with a animal is stronger than with another human being. I don't think you ever stop hurting but I think that if you loved your dog that much you should adopt another dog. You could provide a good loving home to a homeless animal and help rescue yourself in the process. Let me know how things go and if you decide to get another dog. You can never replace Ruger, but you could save a life. Ruger is in a happy place right now, she is waiting for you on the rainbow bridge.

Oh, you made me cry Tracy. My name is Tara and I'm 11 years old. I feel for you. I just lost my 16-year-old Sheltie/Dalmation mix named Cocoa on March 7, 2008. And that was very sweet of you to bake her cookies. My dog loved what every normal dog coulndt ever have: peanut butter and chocolate. When he turned 16, I knew that we would lose him soon. I developed a great bond with him, so I baked him a peanut butter and chocolate chip cake. I loved him so very much. What made me feel better was 3 things.

[LIST]
  • I made a memorial box for him. I put in a variety of things he loved. I put in some of his fur, a marrow bone, some chocolate, a stick, and a picture of me and him when I was your age. I put it in a special box and keep it on my nightstand. It comforts me when I feel sad or upset.
  • I made a collage of pictures of him. It also says RIP COCOA I LOVE YOU. It has like 10 pictures of him on it!! But when I look at it, I remember the great times we had and the bond we had. I never think of his last day.
  • I just talk to him. It doesnt matter if he/she hears you or not just talk to her/him. You can talk back in your mind as her/him. It makes me feel as if hes still here.

Well, that is what I do to help me feel better. I hope this helps. I loved my dog and remember the good times and the great bond we had. I hope you feel better.

One of the hardest things is getting a phone call that tells you your pet has died, I have had one of those calls too.

I am sorry for all of your losses and all I can say is time heals the hole in your heart and your mind remembers all the good and fun times you had and that is what counts.

Tara, those are some great ideas!!!
