I always loved John Denver, he was into nature and wildlife and conservation also. He also left us way too early. This is a beautiful song, please find it and listen to it. It would be beautiful for part of Steve's service.:

The Eagle and the Hawk

I am the eagle, i live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky

I am the hawk and there's blood on my feathers
But time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me, all who believe in me
Share in the freedom i feel when i fly

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
And all that we can be and not what we are

It totally fits! I remember feeling the same type of overwhelming sadness when John died, too. Another John Denver song that would fit it "Poems, Prayers & Promises." For the longest time after he died, I'd cry every time I heard it!

Thank you patticake45 for sharing that. I too am a big fan of John Denver, and was tore up when he passed. Now another great man has gone. Although I'm not sure I'll get over this one. I have a hard time accepting someone as full of love, energy and knowledge, being taken from this earth while he was doing such wonderful work. I guess we are to learn something from this, or God needed him there more.
Thanks for the song, Ramona

Glad you posted this. My husband and I both felt the same way when John died. Someone who was all about doing so much good for this world, but maybe God wanted them more than we did.
Missing them both, and thanks for the song.

I have felt a very similar loss - I loved John Denver since I was very young, and had the opportunity to see him live in concert a couple of times. Although I never had the opportunity to see Steve Irwin live, the loss I feel is great. The song that keeps playing in my mind is Sweet Surrender -

Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Traveled by many, remembered by few
Lookin' for something that I can believe in
Lookin' for something that I'd like to do
with my life....

There's nothin' behind me and
nothin' that ties me to
Somethin' that might have been
true yesterday.

Tomorrow is open, and right now it seems
to be more than enough, to just be here today.

And I don't know what the future is
holdin' in store -
I don't know where I'm going,
I'm not sure where I've been

There's a feeling that guides me,
A light that shines for me,
My life is worth the livin' -
I don't need to see the end

Sweet, Sweet Surrender
Live, Live without care
Like a fish in the water,
Like a bird in the air.

Good lord, it's got me crying all over again.

I'll miss you, Steve, and I'll continue to pray for your family to find some measure of peace in your passing.

How about this one....
Take your candle, Go Light Your World

I had this playing Sunday night as my children and I lit four candles.(my husband just doesnt understand my pain.) As i lit them I said, This candle is for Steve Irwin. He was a wonderful man. This candle is for his family in thier time of deepest sorrow, this candle is for the animals-they have lost thier warrior, this last one is for the world, for we will miss him dearly.

The song below is done wonderfully by Chris Rice. He also does another song 'Breakfast Table' that i heard that Monday we heard of his death. I immediately thought of Terri, cried and still do when I hear it. If I can find that one I'll post it too.

website to hear take your candle:

http://www.songagram.com/May_God_Bless_You/golightyourworld.htm

copy and paste into browser to hear it, words are below.

There is a candle in every soul
Some brightly burning, some dark and cold
There is a Spirit who brings a fire
Ignites a candle and makes His home

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the helpless, confused and torn
And hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

Frustrated brother, see how he's tried to
Light his own candle some other way
See now your sister, she's been robbed and lied to
Still holds a candle without a flame

So Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the lonely, the tired and worn
And hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

We are a family whose hearts are blazing
So let's raise our candles and light up the sky
Praying to our Father, in the name of Jesus
Make us a beacon in darkest times

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, deceived and poor
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

Breakfast Table
Chris Rice

Was it a million miles to heaven
Too far to hear my lonely song
Or is it just my imagination I hear you humming along
I only hold you in my dreams now
I wake up with cold and empty arms
Lord help me get through this long night without you
And soon as the morning comes
Soon as the morning comes

Save me a seat at the breakfast table
Save me a dance around the Milky Way
And save me a thousand years to whisper in your ears
All I’ve wanted to say
Save me a smile and an angel’s feather
Save me a walk down the streets of gold
And baby, we’ll change our minds just like old times
And maybe we’ll just fly away
Or maybe we’ll stay

My lucky doll, you’re in heaven before me
You were my taste of heaven here
Remember we loved to talk about it, we couldn’t wait to get there
So you go on and find your way around now
But remember I’m here missing you
Do me a favor and say hey to Jesus
And tell him I’m missing him too
Tell him I’m missing him too

Then save me a seat at the breakfast table
Save me a dance around the Milky Way
And save me a thousand years to whisper in your ears
All I’ve wanted to say
Save me a smile and an angel’s feather
Save me a walk down the streets of gold
And baby, we’ll change our minds just like old times
And maybe we’ll just fly away
Or maybe we’ll stay

I first heard this song when I worked as music minister for a Catholic church in the early '90's. It's now become a "standard" in hymnals of all denominations.

Fell in love with it then, and still love it today. It's not a John Denver song, but somehow, it feels appropriate. (Especially the refrain.)

ON EAGLE'S WINGS
Michael Joncas

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
who abide in His shadow for life,
say to the Lord: "My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!"

Refrain:
And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
and famine will bring you no fear:
Under His wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield.

Refrain:
And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

You need not fear the terror of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies by day;
Though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come.

Refrain:
And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

For to His angels He's given a command
To guard you in all of your ways;
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Refrain:
And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

This is also not a Denver song, but I love it so much that I've asked that it be sung at my own funeral. The composer/poet Natalie Sleeth wrote the song after she suffered an injury that made her a quadraplegic. It's called the "Hymn of Promise," and it's #707 in the United Methodist hymnal. I sang it to Steve the night we lit our candles for him.

Dear Terri, if you ever are able to sort your way through all the wide world of messages on this site, I hope this shines a light:

"In the bulb there is a flower;
In the seed, an apple tree;
In cocoons, a hidden promise:
Butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
There's a spring that waits to be,
Unrevealed until its season,
Something God alone can see.

There's a song in every silence,
Seeking word and melody;
There's a dawn in every darkness,
Bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future;
What it holds, a mystery,
Unrevealed until its season,
Something God alone can see.

In our end is our beginning;
In our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing;
In our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection;
At the last, a victory,
Unrevealed until its season,
Something God alone can see."

that is so strange you mentioned this; I also loved John Denver since I was five, and its ironic in an eerie way they are together up there!
