I'd like to know whether it saves more electricity to keep a freezer full than to keep it empty. Does the freezer have to work harder to keep more items frozen, or does the lack of empty space help the freezer retain the cold?

Here are some web sites addressing this, but I don't think anyone has any science behind their ideas.

Thanks.

If all the freezer contents have reached the desired temperature and you are wanting to keep your freezer so that it maintains that exact temperature at that steady state, it doesnt matter. The freezer will have to work the same and will have to simply maintain that temperature and make up for any heat energy that conducts into the freezer through the freezer walls. Razz

The freezer has to do more work when there is a higher temperature difference between the outside and inside of it, or when objects are placed in it that are warmer then the freezer set temperature, or when the lid is opened and lets heated air in it.

A full freezer will not let in as much warm air each time the door gets opened.
