Will an object shatter if encased in ice and smashed like in the movies?

in the movie 'Bad Boys' they spray liquid nitrogen on a Master lock, and shatter it with a hammer to open an evidence locker.

Great show, watch it all the time-

ever seen anybody dip a bananna into liquid nitrogen, then hit it with a hammer? it shatters into a million pieces.

P.S.

They do it at the end of "demolition man" too, with liquid nitrogen or something similar...
I'd love to see that myth tested...

With liquid nitrogen - true

Just ice - I think it depends on the object and for how long it is frozen, etc. I remember someone telling me they did this with a piece of fruit and it worked, but I dunno.

I happens in Terminator 2 as well. The liquid nitrogen truck cracks open and the T1000 terminator is drenched in it. The "good" terminator shoots the T1000 and it shatters into millions of pieces.

I would like to see that tested.

that scene in T2 was one of the most memorable scifi movie moments for me. i would love to know if its actually plausible or true. factors that can be tested different materials to freeze, types of freezing techniques, smashing techniques (by hammer, gun, etc...).

Several years ago a LOX delivery driver was attempting to deliver LOX to a hospital. Unfortunately a large rat was blocking entry to the fill port for the LOX. After many attempts to make the rat move or leave, the driver gave up. He squirted the rat with LOX for several minutes. He picked up the frozen rat and threw it across the parking lot. it shattered like pottery on impact with the asphault. He then completed his delivery.

On this episode of Bones http://www.fox.com/bones/recaps/419_1.htm they froze a turkey with liquid nitrogen, and dropped it onto a concrete floor, thinking it would shatter, but it bounced instead. Also a character said a frozen cadaver would do the same thing. Would this really happen?
