hey there..

okay, this one came to me last night when i couldnt sleep:
what happens if you spin a top and on its top counterspin another top with the same speed? is the top top able to stay upright since it is actually spinning and just happens to spin at the same speed as the earth revolves around it? or is there going to be a lack off centrifugal force to keep it stable?

while i am quite certain the latter would happen, two friends of mine swear it would stay upright, eventhough it would not bee visibly turning. this basically follows the idea of the plane on the conveyor belt, which, as far as i remember, posed a slight bit of controversy..

so, what are you guys saying?

Unfortunately, your logic is flawed...

The upper top is not spinning in reference to the lower top, it's spinning in reference to the world, just as the bottom one is.

The interface between them is rotating at the combined speed of the tops, not the upper one minus the lower.
